MAKING ETHICAL CHOICES

Internet Resource

Use Guide

A Common Belief:

Students often think that any resources they can grab from the net should be theirs for the taking.

Look at it this way:

Does leaving your car open give people the right to take what they want –just because you made it easy?

No?

Many people feel the same

way about their work.

It’s their property.

When you take the work of others, remix it, & present it as your own without obtaining permission or giving credit …

… you are disrespecting their efforts & creativity.

And that’s a form of stealing.

Remember:Just because you think no one is being hurt is not a good enough reason to take what is not yours.

(by permission)

(Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)

Making ethical choices for your projects isn’t hard if you know where to look & keep track as you work.

So I expect you to ...

• Obtain permission in writing before using ©opyright material

•List all sources in every project

• Link to a bibliography •Annotate your bibliography to make it easy to check -- add information that tells how/where you used each source.
