Pioneer Consortium presentation NLA/NEMA 2010

Extinction?

April 2007 – All types of libraries met to discuss the merits of Open Source and explore the possibilities for Nebraska libraries

The merits of Open Source Integrated Library Systems

o Open Source software is available to anyone to download and use

o Access to the source code is available for customization

o A large community of developers and users collaborate to continually enhance the systems

History of Pioneer - Part 1

A 2009/10 Library Improvement Grant was awarded to seven public libraries that represented about 45% of Nebraska’s public library users

A consortium was formed to find out if an open source ILS was a viable alternative to the current ILS systems being used by the member libraries

History of Pioneer – Part 2

What we determined in our grant study:

◦Between the two main open source products – Evergreen or Koha – we selected Koha

◦A scoping study gave us data to compare Koha to our existing ILS systems

◦Set up a data center (servers, staff) to implement the ILS or have operations and maintenance hosted? – we chose the latter!

History of Pioneer – Part 3

Five of the original seven libraries elected to implement Koha and chose LibLime/PTFS as the service provider

Our contract includes:◦ Setup, installation and configuration of a

union catalog◦ Provide the latest and most robust version of

Koha ◦ Data migration and de-duping◦ Training◦ Host the system ◦ Provide software maintenance, help desk

support, and development
