STUDENT-CENTERED LEARNING

Agricultural Technology Education

The idea of SCL is not a recent idea. In fact, as early as 20th century, educational educators such as John Dewey argued for a highly active and individualized pedagogical methods which place the student at the center of the teaching-learning process.

Learner-Centered Teaching

"When students aren't involved in a discussion and it's only the teacher who do most of the talking then therefore, learner-centered teaching doesn't takes place."

What is technology in education?

•A tool for learning.•Should be integrated across

the curriculum.•Computers belongs to

classrooms rather than laboratories.

•Classrooms should be connected to the Web.

•Teacher training should focus on curriculum as well as on skills.

New LearningEnvironment

(Student-Centered)

Traditional Learning Environment

(Teacher-Centered)

The Traditional Classroom

•Classrooms are usually arranged with neat columns and rows of student chairs.

•The teacher stands in front of the classroom or sits behind his/ her desk.

•This maintains discipline.•Teachers often makes

students takes time to work individually on worksheets.

•Developing students to be independent learners with the end of making them critical and creative thinkers.

•Direct instruction in which the teacher must perform his role of teaching so that teaching can occur.

Noticeably however, after spending so many minutes in lesson presentation and classroom management, students can get restless and fidgety. Often enough, the teacher has to manage misbehavior in class as students start to talk among themselves or simply stare away in lack of attention.

The SCL Classroom John Dewey described

traditional learning as a process in which the teacher pours information to student learners. This is based on the long accepted belief that the teacher must perform his role of teaching so that learning can occur (Direct Instruction) and it has worked well for obtaining many kinds of learning outcomes.

The problem with the direct instruction approach to learning, however is the fact that the world's societies have began to change. It may not be felt strongly to countries who depends mostly their economy to factory workers. Traditional and direct instruction is very useful in this countries.

In contrast, in industrialized societies we find knowledge-based economies in which workers depends on information that can be accessed through information and communication technologies (ICT’s).

Desiring to gain effectiveness, efficiency and economy in administration, schools in this developed economies have also adopted the support of ICT’s. Their students have now become active not passive learners, demonstrating independence and self awareness in the learning process.

Generally, the new school classroom environment is characterized by student individually or in groups:

• Performing computer word processing for text or graph presentations.

• Preparing PowerPoint presentations • Searching for information on the internet.• Brainstorming on ideas, problems and project

plans as needed, the teacher facilitating instruction, also gives individualized instruction to serve individual needs.

THANK YOU and GOD BLESS!

Activity: Learn the preparation of student-centered

microLESSONS which contains one or two learning objectives and few instructional tasks. A microLESSON has 2 parts:

(a) presentation of an authentic (real, relevant, personal story/ problem/ or situation) which will form the basis for learning activity

(b) activities for higher order thinking.

Present a sample microLESSON to the class using the website http://www.microlessons.com
