Charles was always thinking about how it would be to be a rancher , always fighting Native Americans.

When he was herding his first head of cattle he was fighting rustlers.

In 1882, he went to work as a cowboy on a night wrangler job on cattle drives and round ups this is a better job than herding sheep.

During his days on the range , Charles always had a sketch pad and some brushes he was always sketching when he had a chance.

When he had some experience he quit to become an artist.
