Nearly 1/2 of the world's population — more than 3 billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day

More than 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty — less than $1.25 a day.

1 billion children worldwide are living in poverty

Poverty is a WORLDWIDE issue

POVERTY: INTRODUCTION

According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die EACH day due to povertyAnd they "die quietly in some of the poorest

villages on earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the conscience of the world.”

Less than one per cent of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn't happen

POVERTY: EFFECTS

One-third of deaths, 18 million a year, are due to poverty related cases

In total, 270 million people, most of them women and children, have died as a result of poverty since 1990.

Hunger and malnutrition are the single gravest threats to the world's public health and malnutrition is by far the biggest contributor to child mortality, present in half of all cases

POVERTY: EFFECTS

2.  Illiteracy

Illiteracy is one of the biggest effects of poverty

IRONY: Literacy is the KEY to unlocking the vicious cycle of poverty
