What does a prefix mean?

A prefix is added before a root or a base to get a new word.

Suffixes are added to the end of a root or a base of a word to get a new word.
The suffixes " –ize&-yze " are verb-making suffixes. They mean "to cause or become".
1. sympathize ( also sympathise British English)
Meaning: to feel sorry for someone because you understand their problems
Example:
I sympathize, but I don’t know how to help.
2. visualize
( also visualise British English )

to form a picture of someone or something in your mind SYN imagine : I tried to visualize the house while he was describing it.
3. paralyze ( also paralise British English )
to make someone lose the ability to move part or all of their body : A climbing accident had left him paralyzed from the chest down.

British English )
to give information about something to the public, so that they know about it :
television’s failure to publicize the unemployment issue
10. modernize ( also modernise British
English )
to make something such as a system or building more modern : The business will lose money if it doesn’t modernize.
