The Argonauts in Vrhnika?!

VrhnikaiscloselyrelatedwiththemythoftheArgonauts.Ac-cordingtoGreekmythology,theancientGreekheroJason as-sembledagroupofchampionstoaidhiminhisquesttofindtheGoldenFleece.TheshipbuilderArgusfollowedthegoddessAthenasinstructionsandbuiltashipnamedtheArgoinhishonor. Naming themselves after their ship, the ArgonautssailedtomanycountriesacrosstheBlackSeatotheDanube,thenuptheSavaRiverandfinallyuptheLjubljanicatoMoilnikSprings inVrhnika.There, theArgonautsdisassembledtheirshipandcarrieditontheirshoulderstotheAdriaticSea.

According to the legend, the Argonauts killed a dragonwhereLjubljanaisnowlocatedandwheretheyestablishedthesettlementofEmona.Atthattime,Nauportuswasanimportantport.

Of interest:TherearemanyexplanationsoftheoriginofthenameVrh-nika.ThetownwasalsoknownasNauportus(Latin; riverport for trading ships) de superiori Lay-baco (Italian) andOberlaibach,Ober(n)laybach,OberLaibach(German; UpperLjubljanaorUpperLjubljanica).

Argonaut Days and Vrhnika Night: mid-JuneAsamemorialtotheseancientGreeksandthejourneyoftheArgonauts,Vrhnikasemblemisan imageoftheArgo,and localsandvisitorsfromotherplacesrememberthemeveryyearduringArgonautDays.

Thisisafestivalofentertainment,theartsandsports,buttheprogram includesalsogastronomic, ethnographicandchildrensevents.TheculminationofthefestivalisVrhnikaNight: a large concert with musicians from Slovenia andabroadthatattractsvisitorsfromnearandfar.
