Trachoma is the world's leading infectious cause of blindness, affecting 182 million people in the world's poorest communities where there is a lack of access to clean water and sanitation. Africa is the most affected continent with 170 million people at risk of the disease, but tremendous progress has been made through prevention measures, antibiotic treatment and corrective surgery, which have had an impact not only on national development, but also on individual well-being. For the first time, ridding Africa of trachoma is within reach and Trachoma Free Africa will support us in maximizing existing efforts and attracting new resources to achieve this public health victory. Together, we can eliminate this devastating, yet treatable disease by 2020 by continuing to work toward our goals:

+ Provide trichiasis surgery to all patients who need it + Ensure remaining gaps for delivering antibiotics treatments are filled + Improve coordination of donor investments across the WHO-endorsed

+ Increase advocacy work with African governments to ensure sustainability of gains + Harmonize hygiene and sanitation investments across all health sectors + Strengthen eye health services to ensure trachoma elimination gains are sustained
