IPS officers overstaying theircentral deputation will face dis-ciplinary action, which couldalso be initiated against the headof Central Armed Police Forcesunder whom they serve, theGovernment has warned.

In a communication tochiefs of Central Armed PoliceForces like CRPF, BSF andCISF, Union Home SecretaryRajiv Mehrishi has said it will bethe responsibility of the head ofthe organisation to relieve IPSofficers on completion of theirtenure at the Centre.

No officer will be retained inthe organisation beyond theapproved tenure. Even in casewhere a request has been madefor extension, the officer will getrelieved automatically if noapproval of the competentauthority has been received bythe stipulated date.(PTI)

SURI (WB), Oct 19:

Amidst a wave of rising intolerance, PresidentPranab Mukherjee today expressed serious appre-hensions over whether tolerance and acceptanceof dissent are on the wane in the country.

"Humanism and pluralism should not beabandoned under any circumstance.Assimilation through receiving is a characteris-tic of Indian society. Our collective strengthmust be harnessed to resist evil powers in soci-ety," Mukherjee said.

Addressing a gathering organised byNayaprajanma, a local weekly newspaper here, heasked "whether tolerance and acceptance of dis-sent are on the wane?"

Referring to his just-concluded three nationtour in West Asia, he said wherever he had goneleaders, students and academicians asked himwhat is the chemistry behind strong nationalismin India where there is so much variety in respect

of religion, race, language and anthropologicalfeatures, etc?

"I am not sure why they ask such a question.May be the ongoing unrest had prompted them todo so," he added.

"These questions have also arisen in the mindof people here too. The essential part of the Indiancivilisation and culture is its pluralism. Ourbondage is strong because of tolerance--to acceptthe other's religion and other's opinion."

He reminded the audience of the teachings ofRamakrishna Paramhansa 'Jato Mat Tato Path'"As there are a number of beliefs, there are anumber of ways".

"Indian civilisation has survived for 5000years because of its tolerance. It has alwaysaccepted dissent and differences. A large numberof languages, 1600 dialects and 7 religions coex-ist in India. We have a Constitution that accom-modates all these differences," the Presidentsaid.(PTI)
