Sidewalk & Footbridge Winter Maintenance Policy
2017 Winter Season
During the 2016-2017 winter season, please be aware that the Village of
Port Alice does not remove snow and/or ice from the public sidewalks in
the village.
When the sidewalks and/or footbridges are covered with snow and/or ice they
are very slippery. Please use extreme caution when walking on them. Under
the policy the Public Works Crew is directed to clear the footbridges only ,
and only after the major roads and streets have been cleared.
We regret this inconvenience brought on by forces of nature, and remind you
to use extreme caution when using the sidewalks and footbridges during the
winter, and that you are doing so at your own risk.
This notice is published in accordance with Village of Port Alice
Sidewalk & Footbridge Maintenance Policy No. 4.3.b.

Municipal Office News
The Village of Port Alice has agreed to a 2017 Tax Reduction Agreement with Neucel Specialty Cellulose, in the
amount of $224,815.00. This agreement shows the level of co-operation and support the Village of Port Alice has
provided Neucel in ending production curtailment. This agreement will assist Neucel in securing their necessary
investors. To reduce our 2017 taxation, we had to reduce our employees and operation costs. We have reduced
our Office staff and the Doug Bondue Arena has been reduced to one employee. We are also seeking additional
ways to realign and lessen our operational costs.
The Village of Port Alice has successfully finalized and secured a five (5) year contract with our union employees,
CUPE 401. A five (5) year contract with our union was a huge step to stabilize bargaining locally and securing a
five year contract had never previously been achieved by the Mayor & Council. There were improvements in
Contract Language plus:
The Mayor & Council successfully completed and approved our 2017 Budget. The Mayor & Council achieved our
goal to start 2017 with an approved and balanced budget. Another huge step to stabilize our finances as the
Village has never had an approved budget prior to the start of the incoming year.
The Mayor and Council recently applied for and received Ministry approval for a grant in the amount of $871,848
to address our sewage treatment plant. The Mayor and Council also applied for and received Ministry approval
for an arena chiller/light grant in the amount of $100,000. We also applied for and received grants for the new
Port Alice Signs “Gateway to the Wild West Coast” at the junction of Highway 30 & 19. The ICE-T sign grant was
$12,500 and the Regional District of Mt. Waddington sign grant was $2,500. We have applied for additional
grants which we will be happy to announce upon approval.
The Mayor & Council are looking forward to 2017. We live in the most incredible community and we wish you all
a positive and healthy 2017.
