The Angmering School Weekly News
This is our weekly newsletter for parents, students and friends of the school. We want to give you news about what is happening in school, exciting things, future events and things we would like to see happen.
Issue Date: Week 37 1 July 2016
National School Sports Week National School Sports Week was a success with students participating in qualifiers all week to reach the sports day finals on Friday. Students took part in track and field events alongside tennis, cricket and para sport for a place in their year group final. Rain was a factor in the Year 7 qualifiers but Year 8 and 9 were completed well with all students participating. Sports day on Friday saw Year 8 and 9 finalists battle out for podium spots in the morning while in the afternoon the whole school added to the atmosphere with the tutor group relays and tug of war competitions. The final scores were added to the previous inter tutor scores from the year, along with the student challenge of distance travelled and the PE lessons athletic events. The results were as follows: 1st 7GN 2744 points, 2nd 7RW 1953 points, 3rd 7TW/MB 1866 points 1st 8WG 3695 points, 2nd 8CL 2850 points, 3rd 8JP 2320 points 1st 9GB 2587 points, 2nd 9ER 2009 points, 3rd 9MM 1589 points
Year 9 Future First
Thirty Year 9 students participated in a workshop alongside employees from food retail companies. Students explored the skills needed for employment and how the subjects they learn at school are useful for the world of work. They gained an insight into the range of careers available in the food and consumer goods industry. The workshop is funded by IGD and partnered with Future First.
Mrs Goodman, Careers lead said: “The students were really engaged and the employees were very impressed with the contributions the students made to the activities.”
TWO AUTHOR VISITS!
As part of our summer celebration of reading, Years 8 and 9 will have the fantastic opportunity next week to meet the author G.P. Taylor on Thursday 7
th July. He
will be talking about his fantasy horror stories for teenagers. Afterwards he will be signing books and students will have the chance to buy signed copies of three of his books priced at £6.99 each, courtesy of the company Authors Abroad who have organised the event for us. A letter has been emailed home with full details. For more information about G.P. Taylor and his books please visit http://www.gptaylor.info/ In addition we are welcoming the author Chris Bradford to speak to Year 7 on Wednesday 6
th July. Chris’s presentation will focus on
his ‘Bodyguard’ series, especially book 4: ‘Bodyguard Target’, which is hot off the press. Students will be encouraged to join in with his presentation and learn the techniques of being a bodyguard, just like teenagers Connor and Charley in the series. Chris is also famous for his ‘Young Samurai’ series of books and his presentation will involve a dramatised reading from his books and a demonstration of martial arts techniques. Students will have the opportunity to purchase books which Chris will sign for them. Again full details have been emailed home. Both letters are on the school website. http://www.angmeringschool.co.uk/two-exciting-author-visits/ Mrs. H. Kemp Librarian
Homework Club is cancelled on Monday 4th July due to a
staff training event in the Library
WELL DONE YEAR 7
Well done to everyone in Year 7! This year you have read a combined total of 160,245,779 words between you. 71 have achieved Bronze badges, 54 Silver, 43 Gold (for one million words), 3 are at Platinum level (3 million words) and we even have one Diamond winner: Matthew Ward, who has read over 5 million words this year!
Our inter-tutor reading challenge has encouraged fierce competition and the Olympic hurdle competition display in the Library has seen your paper hurdlers overtaking each other on a weekly basis. This year, two tutor groups in particular have risen to the challenge and both have now read over 22 million words each! After such a magnificent effort we have decided to award the prize to both tutor groups. Congratulations 7RW and 7GN - in addition to the Chris Bradford author event which all Year 7s will enjoy next Wednesday, you are also going to join Year 8 when they meet author GP Taylor on Thursday.
Mrs Kemp Librarian

Both were in the adult section and he was the only child to enter.

Well done to all the students who have taken part
as the Olympic Torch has continued its journey
round the locality.

Can you solve this week’s problem?
Cubes on a Cube
Last week’s problem
A list is made of every digit that is the units digit of at least one prime number. How many
digits appear in the list?
End of a Prime
Last week’s solution
If a number ends in an even digit, then the number is even, so is divisible by 2. The only
prime number that is divisible by 2 is 2 itself,
so 2 appears in the list, but 0, 4, 6 and 8 do
not.
The primes 11, 3, 5, 7 and 19 show that any of
the odd digits can end a prime.
Therefore the list is 1,2,3,5,7,9, so has length 6.
Gold Stars Of The Week
Gold Stars of the week is a reward system where teachers nominate students for working consistently at Gold standard which is above and beyond expectations. Students then have the opportunity to meet with the Headship team to discuss their achievements and work.
The students are rewarded with 25 credits and a well done certificate to take home to share their success with parents/guardians. We feel this is an excellent reward system for the students to share their success with the Headship team.
Congratulations to the Gold Star of the Week students for Week 37:
Georgia Wood for her science work on how Ethanol is produced from fermentation. Tyler Whitcombe, Sophie Ansell and Ellen Nicholas for excellent PE mock exam results and also Gemma Stevenson for good progress made in her PE mock and for increased confidence in lessons.
Look out next week for a prom report and prom
pictures!

Cavalier
Noun: 1 historical - supporter of King Charles 1 2 archaic - a courtly gentleman
Adjective: showing a lack of proper concern; offhand “Anne was irritated by his cavalier attitude”
Cavalier can function as a verb, adjective, or noun in English (the latter two parts of speech are the more
common ones), and has been in regular use since the 16th century. The earliest sense in which the noun
was used, according to our records, was to refer to a raised fortified structure. It also has had the meaning
of “a gentleman trained in arms” since at least the end of the 16th century. Although the first sense in
which cavalier was used as an adjective is "debonair” it also quickly took on connotations of insouciance,
the sense in which President Obama appears to have used it recently. In other words, he was suggesting
that Trump's proposals were "marked by or given to offhand and often disdainful dismissal of important
matters."
Foreign translations
French: cavalier
German: Kavalier
Spanish: caballero/ arrogante
Italian: cavaliere/ altezzoso
