The Angmering School Weekly News This is our weekly newsletter for parents, students and friends of the school. We want to give you news about what is happening in school, exciting things, future events and things we would like to see happen. Issue Date: Week 39 21 July 2017 Headteacher’s End of Term Message Dear students, parents and carers, As we near the end of the summer term, and my first year here as headteacher, we can all reflect on a positive year and, more importantly, look forward to an even better year ahead. OfSted's visit in February gave us a clear message about the need to continue improving our exam results in Key Stage 4 and we have a clear plan already well underway to do this. All our staff have taken the messages from the report as a positive challenge and are clearly focused on driving up standards whilst continuing our excellent student support, extra curricular activities and community spirit. I am determined that outcomes for students will improve but that we will not just become an exam factory! As happens every year we will be saying goodbye to a fair few staff at the end of term. The following staff are moving on to pastures new: Miss Boyne, Miss Dearling, Miss Hancock, Miss Payne, Mrs Chapman, Miss Emmerson, Miss Millington, Mrs Lumsdon, Mrs Wexler, Miss Burtenshaw, Ms Johnson, Mr Rasarathnam, Mrs Smith (11 years here), Ms Martin (LSA), Miss Joshi (29 years here) and Mr Lury (38 years here!). Whether they are moving for promotion, to travel or to enjoy a well deserved retirement we wish them all the very best and thank them sincerely for their excellent contributions to our school and community. As we move into next year we are launching our new uniform skirt for girls, a new Gold standard for 'Behaviour for Learning' and are continuing to improve the standards of teaching through sharing best practice and staff training. I am delighted to announce that in order to support rapid improvement in some key areas both Mrs Allison and Mrs Anderson will be stepping up to Deputy Headteacher posts with effect from September. May I take this opportunity to thank you all for your hard work (students) and support (parents and carers) and wish you all a very restful summer break. Kind regards, Simon Liley Headteacher

Headteacher’s End of Term Message

Dear students, parents and carers,

As we near the end of the summer term, and my first year here as headteacher, we can all reflect on a positive year and, more importantly, look forward to an even better year ahead.

The following staff are moving on to pastures new:

Miss Boyne, Miss Dearling, Miss Hancock, Miss Payne, Mrs Chapman, Miss Emmerson, Miss Millington, Mrs Lumsdon, Mrs Wexler, Miss Burtenshaw, Ms Johnson, Mr Rasarathnam, Mrs Smith (11 years here), Ms Martin (LSA), Miss Joshi (29 years here) and Mr Lury (38 years here!).

Y8 PGL Trip

On Friday afternoon a very lively and excitable group of Year 8s set off on the coach for a weekend of adventure (with some rather excitable staff too!). The weekend saw the students and staff taking part in challenging and scary activities such as zip wire, giant swing and trapeze. There were problem solving activities and plenty of team building games which saw the students working well together and testing their determination and bravery. All the students really pushed themselves over the weekend and achieved things they never thought possible! The staff were really impressed with their team work, resilience and behaviour over the weekend and we are already planning our next adventure. A big thank you to the staff: Miss Potter, Mr Jenner and Miss Wood for volunteering their weekend and being good sports! Miss Ashton

Y7 Futures Cafes

The Year 7 Futures Cafes took place between Monday 17th and Friday 21st July.

Students demonstrated their excellent teamwork skills and worked extremely hard to create imaginative and professional looking cafes. We have seen a wide variety of themes selected this year which included Medieval, Greek Gourmet, Alice in Wonderland as well as an American themed Sports Café. Students spent lessons planning and evaluating their decisions in order to refine their menus and ensure their communication skills were up to standard in front of our paying guests! The designers ensured the cafes were aesthetically pleasing. The front of house students played a pivotal role in the smooth running of the cafe and the chefs were crucial to maintaining high standards of food presentation. Finally, the finance teams ensured that all the feedback surveys were completed along with collecting money from our lovely customers. We look forward to sharing with you the final amount of profit raised that will go to the LNC charity. Well done Year 7 on working together for the good of the team and producing such wonderful cafes!

European Biathle Championships

Ethan Fincham 10LA has just arrived back from his trip to the European Biathle Championships in Portugual and was successful in winning the Under 17 European title. Ethan had to compete in heats on the Saturday where he qualified second fastest for the final, which took place on the Sunday. Ethan executed a great race, he sat in third place for the first 1km before making his move with around 200ms to transition. Ethan led into transition 1 and out onto the swim. From here Ethan worked extremely hard, leading the 200m open water sea swim and holding this through into transition 2. With just another 1.2km run to go Ethan pushed hard and was able to hold his lead and control the race to finish 10 seconds ahead of his nearest challenger. Well done Ethan!

Teens and Toddlers Project 1 pre-school 8 hardworking students 54 hours over 18 weeks These are the numbers which tell part of the story of the current group of year 9s which last week culminated in their graduation from the second successful Teens and Toddlers project. Each Wednesday Abigail, Leah, Josh, Ryan, Meghan, Elycia, Lily and Zak have wholly committed and risen to the challenge of mentoring a toddler. This combined with curriculum study, ensures they are on target to qualify for an NCFE Level 3 in Personal and Social Education. Through discussion, study and self-reflection time has been spent considering: Personal responsibility and choice Interpersonal and relational skills Mentoring a child Job skills and engaging in a learning environment Contributing to the community Appreciation of difference Aspirations These are just to name but a few of the invaluable areas they have invested in. Time keeping, commitment and being a part of a working environment and team have been an enriching experience for all which they will remember long after the certificates are awarded.

LNC SUMMER FAYRE

Despite the extremely windy evening last night we would like to thank everyone who attend the Fayre. A massive thank you to the lovely Miss Amy Baker for singing such a wonderful array of 50's Jazz/Swing songs throughout the evening, please take a look at her website: www.amy-baker.com

The BBQ was a 'roaring' success, and even the wind did not stop Mr Andrews from frying up a storm of onions in the Learning Centre and setting off the fire alarm, resulting in a visit from the local fire department. Big thanks to Miss Webb for all her hard work in organising this fantastic event.

Many families visited The Reptiliers and enjoyed seeing and touching a wide variety of animals/reptiles.

We would like thank the stall holders who came and supported this event and we hope they will return for our Christmas Fayre.

We raised over £500 which will go towards specialist transport for sporting events and trips.

A Night at the Musicals - WATCH OUT WEST END!

Last week, Musical Theatre performers and production students entertained and thrilled audiences with a selection of Musical Theatre numbers. Compared by the charismatic year 13 duo Lauren Dennis and Abi Pelham, numbers from popular shows such as Les Miserables, Hamilton, Funny Girl, Billy Elliot, Hairspray, Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, High School Musical, Matilda and title numbers from Disney films were expertly and professionally delivered by the talented cast in the style of a Tony/ Olivier Awards Ceremony. Each night was a sell out success, with the Friday evening requiring more seats! Audiences responded with comments professionals would be pleased to receive: "I can't believe there are so many talented singers, dancers and actors at Angmering!" "Wow!" "What a spectacular evening!" "Pure enjoyment." "I expect most of these students will have successful performance careers." "And they're not professional?!" We are sad to say goodbye to our Angmering School Musical Theatre Group leavers - Abi Pelham, Lauren Dennis, Chrissie Bhima, Scott Bowden, Alexis Luscombe and Amber Kelly, all of whom are continuing with performance. We wish them the very best of success. At the time of closing the final evening, I became emotional, not simply because we had to say goodbye to some amazing students, but also due to the pride I had for each and every student who all overcame their nerves and delivered with passion.

Visit to the British Racing School

On Wednesday six Year 10 students visited the British Racing School in Newmarket. They had an amazing day looking around the facilities and learning about careers within the horse racing industry. The British Racing School is a Centre of Excellence for education in the horseracing world, and provides a range of training of the highest standard to meet the needs of the racing industry. In recent years the Careers Department have supported two students through the application process. These students are now working at racing yards in Pulborough and Epsom respectively.

Inter Tutor Dance

A huge congratulations to all of the year 7s who took part in the Inter-tutor dance

competition this week. The level of professionalism was outstanding and the creativity of

the work by the year 10 GCSE mentors was exemplary. The performances ranged from

'Space' to 'Cops and Robbers' and the judges had a really tough decision deciding on the

awards for each group. Awards of excellence were given for multiple areas including team

work, choreography and entertainment with the overall first place going to 7NT who

should be extremely proud of this achievement. A huge thank you to all of the staff,

students and parents involved, events like this would not be possible without you! Keep

dancing!

“Tropic” Support the

Lavinia Norfolk Centre

A local team of Tropic Ambassadors have been busy fund-raising for the Lavinia Norfolk Centre (LNC) at The Angmering School. Through their charitable efforts, the Tropic Beauties have raised £584.60 to support the work of the LNC in providing special educational, sporting and social experiences for the students who attend the LNC. Tropic Ambassadors, Emma Woolley, Sarah Bird, Amanda Youldon and Claire Crowther were delighted to be able to personally hand over the cheque to such an inspiring group of students. Their teacher Mr Andrews (Senco) said, “We really appreciate the Tropic Ambassadors’ support and this will enable our students to attend the Stoke Mandeville Games in September and will give the visually impaired students the opportunity to attend a special theatre workshop and audio-described show at a West-End theatre in London.” The Tropic Ambassadors were given a tour of the LNC to see for themselves how their fund-raising will help. “It is great to be able to give something back to the community we work in. Our Tropic team love educating others on the Green Beauty Revolution and our 100% naturally derived skincare but it feels even better to know that we can support a wonderful cause like the LNC in the process.” Contact your local Tropic Ambassador who will help you with further information about Tropic Skincare and if you want to find out how you can support The Lavinia Norfolk Centre Charitable Trust, contact [email protected] or take a look at the LNC Facebook page.

Our First Protest Day Debate The Angmering School held its first debate day on the topic of "Protest". It was really great to see so any people turn up to explore their ideas on the power of protest. The day consisted of two parts: the first part of the day involved exploring ideas about emergence and responses to authoritarian governments through talks delivered by a guest speaker, Jo Prior, and several teachers; and the second part allowed everyone to plan their own protest in groups and present their ideas, or to participate in a Socratic debate to challenge their ideas and others’. Some planned protest even sparked impromptu counter protest — hardly surprising that a protest advocating the removal of blue shirt privileges wasn’t popular with a predominantly blue shirt audience…I had a great time!

The Angmering Debating Cup

Ben Galbally 12SJ was awarded the Angmering Debating Cup for his tireless work this year running the Upper and Lower School Debating Societies - kindly donated by David Brixey, former headteacher of The Angmering School.

Continued

Listening to the ideas and experiences of different teachers in the school around the topic was very enlightening and it was fantastic to hear the thoughts and viewpoints of students excited by the conversation. It’s incredibly important that young people are aware of and discussing the issues of today, and with the great turnout from Years 8, 10 and 12, it was clear that there is a strong and stable student voice out there. With the wonderful feedback received, we plan to build on the success and do something even more exciting next year. Special thanks to Jo Sykes and Jude Thompson, who made this day happen.

STEM Crew Visit to Landrover BAR Portsmouth

On Tuesday 18th July a group of year 8 & 9 students visited the Ben Ainslie Racing Centre in Portsmouth as part of a sailing initiative with the Youth Sports Trust. The day began with a look around the Teck Deck Centre where students learnt about the history of the Americas Cup sailing race and looked at how technology has evolved in the sport. Students had the opportunity to step inside the hull of the latest sailing boat used by the GB team in the most recent America’s Cup and had a go at operating the grinders that power the sails on board. The afternoon session consisted of a physics workshop entitled ‘Wings, Sails & Wind Tunnel Testing’. During this workshop students learnt about the physics behind how sails are powered and had a go at making their own sails which were then tested in the centres very own wind tunnel to measure the lift and drag of the sails. All in all students had a fantastic day at the Ben Ainslie Racing centre and were a credit to the school throughout the trip. A big thank you to Mrs Emerton, Mrs Atwal and Mr Jenner for accompanying students on the trip. Miss Parrott

Can you solve this week’s problem?

Cube Pile

Rick has five cubes. Each one is 2cm taller than the previous one. The largest cube is the same height as a tower built of the two smallest cubes.

How did you get on with last week’s problem?

Solution

Stacking Shapes An equilateral triangle, square and regular pentagon all have the same side length. The triangle is drawn on the top edge of the square, and the pentagon is drawn on and below the bottom edge of the square. All of the edges match up exactly. What is the sum of the interior angles of the resulting polygon?

Reminder on Uniform Changes

Black leather shoes (not trainers) with no logos of any kind are to be worn. Clarity as to Vans - they are now permitted provided they are black leather and the labels are removed.

A reminder of the new skirt: it is the green tartan and Ricaras are now working to stock these. The new skirt will become part of our uniform with effect from 1st September 2017 and we would like to have all girls wearing it at that point. We do however appreciate that some girls may have quite new black skirts from 2016/17 and we are happy for them to wear these until a new tartan one is bought in the autumn term, but not beyond December 2017. This gives existing students up to 6 months to replace their black skirts with the new style. Girls can of course continue to wear black trousers. The skirt prices are £20.99 for waist 22 - 28, £23.99 for 30 - 32 and £27.99 for 34 - 38" waist.

Reminder to ensure you name all your child’s uniform and PE kit before they return in September. If it is named then we are able to return it to you. Please do not just put your child’s initials as we have many children with the same initials.

Homework Club

Well done to everyone who has come along to Homework Club after school in the Library this year and thank you to the staff and sixth formers who have made this possible. The after school sessions have finished for this term, but will resume again in September.

Barnardo’s Moving Forward Project is working with West Sussex Short Breaks to offer a fun and inspir-ing life skills program for young people aged 12-18 years old who have a disability or learning difficulty living in West Sussex.

The life skills program consists of a 5 day holiday workshop (summer 2017) and two 10 week life skills youth groups, each time with a different life skills fo-cus. We will support the young people in becoming more independent at the same time as building their confidence and expanding their social circle. Venues for the evening group are being confirmed over the next week and are likely to be at the Spring-board Project venues in Crawley and Horsham. Young people can book on using the booking form at the end of the flyer which will then initiate a referral form being sent. On receipt of this form an initial home visit will be undertaken by service staff. In dis-cussion with the young person and parent/carer, an All About Me plan will be completed which will deter-mine the outcomes to be achieved. http://www.angmeringschool.co.uk/barnardos-moving-forward-project/

East Preston FC Academy Under 13s (year 7) about to

embark on their first season of league football!

It’s been a busy summer for the East Preston Football Club Academy. After starting with a handful of players back in September their newly formed Under 13s have been playing regular friendly matches against local opposition before they join the local league in September. The community club offers a fun environment allowing local boys and girls to play, develop and enjoy their football. It provides a good standard of coaching with a logical structure for players to progress with age, hopefully all the way through to the first team. Their under 13s (year 7) would welcome new players. Open training sessions are every Saturday morning, 9.00am-10.30am and Wednesday evenings 6.15pm-7.30pm at East Preston Football Club, Lashmar Lane, East Preston. For more information on the above contact: Gary Wallis on 07971 131107 or email [email protected]
