EXCELLENT Y7 CHRISTMAS FAIR

Well done to all the Y7s who worked so hard to create fabulous stalls at the Fair on Friday.

Thank you to everyone who bought items from the LNC Duke of Edinburgh group at the Christmas Fair last Friday. The students counted the coppers and had raised a grand sum of £167 towards the school defibrillator's fund.

Well done to the students!

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to send you a note to update you about my 10 mile Charity Swim. I completed it on Saturday 28

th November in 4 hours and 18 minutes which was

quite a shock as this was a lot faster than I was expecting! My shoulders ached for a couple of days after ,but it felt good to do something that I know will help others a lot. I would like to say THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who donated! I am absolutely overwhelmed with the amount I have received and kind messages of support. Also, I must thank all people who came in and joined me in the pool, Amber Brown and Tyler Whitcombe, your support was much needed in the final miles! It looks like the total will be over £1,500 raised for The Sussex Snowdrop Trust. This Sussex-based charity provides home-based care for life-limited and terminally ill children and their families as well as arranging special days out to give the families happy memories during a difficult time in their lives. Again, I am thanking you all on my family’s behalf and on the charity's behalf because it means so much to us and them that I have raised such a huge amount for such an amazing charity. Thank you so much for your generosity and kindness, it has touched me and my family greatly. Best wishes Jessica Brown 11LN www.justgiving.com/Jessica-Brown25 www.thesussexsnowdroptrust.com

Well done Jessie—a fantastic achievement. The school is very proud of you.

At the end of November, one of our Sixth Form students, Arran Collis, presented a research poster at the Nuffield Research Placements celebration evening. This is a result of spending six weeks in the summer working on a research project with the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum at Singleton. Arran focused on finding and explaining the chemistry behind the medicinal use of garlic in history. He conducted real research and contributed something new to this field of study. He reported his findings in a scientific report and as a research poster. As part of the celebration evening, Arran confidently answered questions from university academics and industry specialists who were interested in his research. During the celebration evening, Arran was awarded with a Gold CREST award. This is the highest level of recognition offered by the British Science Association to under-20 year olds. Well done Arran!

Sport Update

On Thursday 3rd December the Y7 girls’ netball team travelled to Sir Robert Woodard Academy to play in their first netball game of the season. For some of our girls this was their first fixture representing the school. Having lost the toss, Sir Robert Woodard Academy had the first centre but it wasn’t long before our girls got their first interception to break down play. Some good passing between Finley Turner at C and Grace Clavering saw the girls have their first attempts getting the ball into the D. Both teams had some good attempts at scoring but the wind played havoc with the direction of the ball with both teams narrowly missing out on their first goals at the end of the first quarter. Tara Todd and Amber Brown replaced Millie Whiting and Ella Rumsey to begin the second quarter and made some fine interceptions to put Sir Robert Woodard under pressure. Some great movement on the court from Olivia Curtis GA and Ava Hofmeister saw Angmering take a 2-1 lead over Sir Robert Woodard at half time. Going into the third quarter the team were unfortunate to loose Tara Todd to injury. With a quick substitution made, the girls set to work once more making some great runs and using the wings to gain ground. This was a difficult quarter for the girls with both teams scoring just one goal each due to some fantastic marking and defending. With the score at 3-3 going into the last quarter all was to play for. The girls put on an inspiring performance working tirelessly to help support each other. Three incredible goals from Ava Hofmeister and Olivia Curtis saw the Angmering girls secure their first win of the league over Sir Robert Woodard leading the game 5-4 at full time. Students: Finley Turner, Olivia Curtis, Ella Rumsey, Ava Hofmeister, Amy Johnson, Amber Brown, Grace Clavering, Tara Todd and Millie Whiting. Players player of the match: Ava Hofmeister

Floodlit Cricket

Sport is going well at Angmering, however on a cold, dark, windy night what sport should we play? The answer - Floodlight Cricket!!

In a newly formed competition introduced by Sussex Cricket Club, Angmering & Durrington High school entered 2 teams each in a pilot competition, a game adapted to modernised Cricket and made it fast paced and action packed with a combination of Street Cricket mixed with 20/20 and indoor cricket rules. This allowed both Angmering & Durrington High to demonstrate some fantastic skills.

Floodlight Cricket is a new initiative set up by Sussex CC in which all players bat and bowl, points are won and lost dependant on runs and wickets and players can choose 1 over in which all points are doubled with a POWER PLAY. Additionally if players strike in out the playing area runs are deducted making a quick, yet exciting game and the last play of the Innings is worth DOUBLE too.

The evening started with both teams able to play some exciting cricket, smashing sixes and deciding on power plays to earn double runs, and it was Angmering B that came out victorious in their first game v DHS. Following on from this they demonstrated some fantastic all round performances in which everyone had to bat and bowl and they never looked back and won 3 out of 3 to take the overall honours beating Angmering A in their final game. Special Thanks to Mr Jenner for setting up the competition, Sussex CC

for the delivery of the competition and well done to : PATRICK CLOUT ,

ASH CATTON , HARRY RICKMAN ORPEN , THEO HEMSLEY , ALEX

ROBERTS & OLIVER LEGGE on their success.

Morgan Rapson 8CL

A few weeks ago, Morgan raised some money for the Little Princess Trust. In fact Morgan raised £293 by having her “golden locks” cut off, and then donating her hair so it can be made into real wigs for boys and girls who have lost their hair through cancer treatment.

It makes all of us at Angmering School so humble at the selfless act Morgan has performed.

If you would like to know more about the Trust or make a donation then go to www.littleprincesses.org.uk/ Mr. S. Smith, Year 8 Year Team Leader.

MATHEMATICS MASTERCLASSES

Four students in Year 9 have spent eight Saturday mornings this term travelling to The University of Sussex in Brighton to attend Masterclasses in Mathematics. Each of the Masterclasses was delivered by a different speaker and covered topics such as The Maths of Planetary Motion, The Importance of Mathematical Patterns, Codebreaking and Exploring and Solving Series to name but a few. In the final week the students had to solve mathematical challenges in groups and were then given a participation certificate.

livid

adjective

Definition 1 : discolored by bruising : black-and-blue

2 : ashen, pallid

3 : reddish

4 : very angry : enraged

Examples

When Donald's mother caught him sneaking in after midnight, she was livid.

Etymology

Livid has a colourful history. The Latin adjective lividus means "dull, greyish, or leaden blue." From this came the French livide and eventually the English livid, which was used to describe flesh discoloured by a bruise when it was first recorded in the early 17th century. A slight extension of meaning gave it the sense "ashen or pallid," as used in describing a corpse. Livid eventually came to be used in this sense to characterize the complexion of a person pale with anger ("livid with rage"). From this meaning came two new senses in the 20th century. One was "reddish," as one is as likely to become red with anger as pale; the other was simply "angry" or "furious," the most common sense of the word today. Foreign translations

French: livide

German: wütend

Spanish: lívido

Japanese: 青藍色

HEDGEHOG NEWS Four baby hedgehogs were found by students on school site last week. They were born too late in the year, and were too small to survive hibernation. Two have gone to Wadars (awaiting update) and the other two are being looked after by a member of staff for the winter whilst they gain enough weight ready to be re-leased in the spring. If you find a baby hedgehog, or any hedgehog out in the daytime, please contact Wadars for advice. http://www.wadars.co.uk/ Rescue & Rehoming Wildlife & Pets Telephone 01903 247111 Email - [email protected]
