DESCRIPTION

The Albuquerque Police Department’s former records custodian has filed a lawsuit in state district court accusing high-ranking police and city officials of ordering him to withhold documents requested in high-profile cases.Citing specific examples, former records custodian Reynaldo Chavez said APD officials “committed unlawful and improper actions” when records were requested related to the shooting of mentally ill homeless man James Boyd, the department’s relationship with Taser International and the death of civil rights lawyer Mary Han.The lawsuit alleges there are still records from those highly publicized cases that haven’t been made public. It also accuses the city of deleting records related to police surveillance of a protest against police in June 2014, and alleges Chavez was told to engage in delay and obstruction in responding to records requests made by certain individuals, including department critics.
