3. INTRODUCTION
- The bark from the willow treeSalix Albacontains high levels of
salicin, the glycoside of salicylic acid.
- 1853, French chemist Charles F. Gerhardt synthesized a
primitive form of aspirin, a derivative of salicylic acid.
- 1897 Felix Hoffmann, a German chemist working at the Bayer
division of I.G. Farber, discovered a better method for
synthesizing the drug.
4. WHAT IS ASPIRIN?
- Aspirin is the general name for acetylsalicylic acid
(ASA).
- The synthetic drug was developed as an analgesic
(painkiller).
- It was the first NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug),
and probably still the most effective.
- it is also the trademark of the drug produced by Bayer in
Germany.
- in other places the term aspirin refers to ASA by itself or as
an ingredient in other drugs.
5. SYNTHESIZING ACETYL SALICYLIC ACID
-
- salicylic acid will be combined with acetic anhydride.
-
- small amount of phosphoric acid added as catalyst.
6. SYNTHETIC ASPIRIN
7. INDUSTRIAL SCALE SYNTHESIS 8. CURRENT USES OF ASPIRIN
- Over-the-counter pain relief, especially for headaches.
- Reduction of swelling and inflammation in arthritis and
injuries.
- Anti-coagulant given to sufferers of heart attack.
- Can reduce severity of heart attack if taken at first
symptoms.
- Recovery after cardiovascular surgery.
- Treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and other
rheumatoid diseases.
9. QUESTION 10
- Using data from the literature, design a small pilot-plant-size
process for producing 5 kg of aspirin per hour, by the reaction of
salicyclic acid with acetic anhydride.(note: Your design should
include a flow diagram, plus a complete material and energy
balance).
