Unit  Overview

STEM  student  teams  will  work  with  the  industry  project  lead  to  design  and  manufacture  an  architecturally  sound  birdhouse  using  research  based  design  principles  specifically  intended  to  accommodate  a  bird  species  of  the  teams’  choosing.  The  product  will  be  designed  and  manufactured  according  to  the  principles  laid  out  by  the  industry  project  lead  at  the  kick-‐off  event.  For  IDEIS  Design,  the  focus  is  on  the  development  and  construction  of  an  architecturally  sound,  specifies  specific  birdhouse.  For  the  STEM  School,  the  focus  is  on  the  collaborative  problem  solving  skills  and  thorough  use  of  the  Engineering  Design  Cycle.

Unit  Essential  Issue

Problem:    Design  and  manufacture  an  architecturally  sound,  species-‐specific  birdhouse.

Kick  Off  Event

Kickoff  –  3/19/2015  at  12:30  at  STEM  School  Chattanooga  The  industry  project  lead  will  visit  the  STEM  School  and  will  introduce  students  to  the  project  by  facilitating  a  mini-‐project  intended  to  expose  the  students  to  the  general  idea  of  utilizing  architectural  design  strategies  to  create  a  species-‐specific  habitat.  Student  teams  will  be  able  to  ask  questions  to  the  industry  lead  throughout  the  project.

Culminating  Events

5/6/2015  at  12:00  at  Green  Spaces  Conference  Room  Student  teams  will  present  to  a  panel  of  experts  compiled  by  the  industry  lead.  This  presentation  should  include,  but  is  not  limited  to,  digital  or  physical  visual  presentation  aids,  study  models  (from  initial  iterations  of  the  design  cycle),  print-‐outs  of  the  blueprints  from  Sketchup  or  AutoCAD,  full  size  dwellings  for  the  selected  bird  species.

Common  Assessment

Students  will  choose  to  be  scored  using  either  the  Critical  Thinking,  Creative  Thinking,  or  Collaborative  Skills  rubric.    All  4’s  will  equate  to  Advanced,  scores  of  3  and  4  will  equate  to  Proficient,  and  any  scores  below  a  3  will  equate  to  Below  Basic.    Items  that  will  be  used  to  score  student  work:

• Presentation  to  the  expert  jury  panel  including  the  items  listed  in  the  culminating  event  section  above.  • Product  (dwelling  place  or  appropriately  scaled  model  of  the  bird  house)  • Self-‐Assessment  of  student  team  using  the  Collaborative  Skills  Rubric
