Unit Quarter 4 Title: UTC Challenger Center Coding & 3D Printing Lab

UTC Challenger and STEM Education Center
Unit Overview
STEM student teams will work with the industry project lead to design and facilitate a one to two hour coding and 3D printing lab experience for 4th through 8th grade students visiting the UTC Challenger and STEM Education Center. The experience will be geared toward introducing field trip groups to the basics of object oriented programming and to give students a glimpse into the possibilities of 3D printing. For the Challenger Center, the focus is on the development and facilitation of an effective student experience. For the STEM School, the focus is on the collaborative problem solving skills demonstrated through effective experience design.
Unit Essential Issue
Problem: Design and facilitate an effective coding and 3D printing introduction experience.
Kick Off Event
Kickoff – 3/16/2015 at 12:30 at the UTC Challenger and STEM Education Center The industry project lead will introduce students to the project by facilitating a mini-‐tour intended to expose the student teams to the general principles of a thoughtfully designed educational field trip experience for students. Student teams will be able to ask questions to the industry lead throughout the project.
Culminating Events
Student teams will present to a panel of experts compiled by the industry lead. This presentation should include, but is not limited to, digital and physical media that enhance the student teams’ ability to communicate the full lab experience in five to seven minutes. If the presentation meets a the expectations of the industry partner and the expert panel, the student team will be asked to facilitate the experience as a day-‐long pilot at the Challenger Center’s educational summer camps in June.
Common Assessment
Students will choose to be scored using either the Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking, or Collaborative Skills rubric. All 4’s will equate to Advanced, scores of 3 and 4 will equate to Proficient, and any scores below a 3 will equate to Below Basic. Items that will be used to score student work:
• Presentation to the expert jury panel including the items listed in the culminating event section above. • Product (lab experience lesson plan) • Self-‐Assessment of student team using the Collaborative Skills Rubric
