Season’s Greetings,
I hope you are all surviving
the frantic lead up to
Christmas and looking
forward to some well
earned rest and
relaxation!
December is a
month you
should
definitely
come and
visit the Club, with plenty of festive
activities for the whole family to
enjoy.
Our Christmas raffles commence on
the 3rd December and will run every

choose from.
On Sunday the 7th December we have

from 12:30pm to 2:30pm and the
kids will be well entertained with

2014 was an exciting year of change
for Penshurst RSL and I’m looking
forward to continuing the trend of
modernising our much-
loved Club in
2015.
Let’s not forget that every time you
visit our Club, you are supporting
many local community sports and
social groups that would not be able
to provide their valuable services
without our sponsorship. Clubs are
here to improve the quality of life to
people of all ages, backgrounds
and ethnicities and
this is
what I love most about working in this
industry.
I’d like to wish everyone a very Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year and I
hope to see you at Penshurst RSL in
2015.
Regards,
Chris Hendley

SUB CLUB NEWS
As it is almost the end of the year and, once the shopping is com-plete, many of us will be winding down and looking forward to a well-earned rest over the festive season.
Before then, the travel club has three functions to look forward to. Towards the end of November each year, we run an end-of-year party at Penshurst RSL Club. This is a fun night with lucky door and raf-fle prizes etc., plus a delicious Christmas dinner supplied by the great cooks in the Club’s Bistro.
On 10 December, there will be a theatre party to the Theatre Royal to see the new David Williamson play “Rupert”, based on the life and times of Rupert Murdoch.
Our City Christmas Lights coach tour is being held on 17 December. An early all-you-can-eat dinner is first before we travel on to Rydal-mere where we will board the RiverCat, giving us a chance to ad-mire the lights along the Par-ramatta River and the buildings around Circular Quay. Here we rejoin our coach for a tour of the city which includes Macquarie Street, St Mary’s Cathedral and Sydney’s Town Hall with a peek at the impressive windows of David Jones. Afterwards, we head to Ashbury to admire the amazing efforts of its residents.
The travel club program for 2015 is well under way and the Harbour Cruise in January is almost full, as is the group booking to see “Dirty Dancing”. However, at least one
trip is offered each month and these are open to new members. If you are thinking of joining (and you are a member of Penshurst RSL), you are encouraged to come along to one of our meetings held on the first Wednesday of each month from 6.45 pm in the Club’s Auditorium. $6 will cover you for the financial year. For further in-formation, please see our website: http://pentravelclub.weebly.com or e-mail pentravel-club@bigpond.com or you may contact us on 9533 5809 (leave a message if necessary).
Wishing everyone, in particular the staff and management of Pen-shurst RSL Club, a wonderful Christmas and a very happy and healthy New Year.

SUB CLUB NEWS
TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK-
END On November 1 & 2 we took
17 of our most committed learn-to
-swim teachers away for the week-
end as our way of saying “thank
you” for all the time they give to
teaching your children to swim.
Camp Wombaroo in the Southern
Highlands was a brilliant venue and
the teachers (and chaperones) all
had a fantastic time. There cer-
tainly wasn’t any time for relaxa-
tion, half hour after arriving we
were all down at the giant swing,
followed shortly thereafter by
archery, which was fabulous fun.
After dinner we set about making a
bonfire. The boys went searching
for wood and the girls made an
Aussie adaptation of (American)
“s’mores” – Waffle cones filled
with several kinds of berries,
marshmallows & chocolate but-
tons, wrapped in foil and heated
over an open fire until the cone is
crispy, the chocolate melted, the
fruit warmed and the marshmal-
lows gooey. DEEE-LICIOUS. Hey, it
has fruit… It’s healthy right?
The next morning we were up at
7.30am for breakfast then we were
all off to raft building which was
probably the best activity we did
the entire weekend. Four groups
of four kids set about creating &
building a raft that could both sup-
port them and make it once
around the lake. All four rafts were
different; there are certainly some
creative minds in our teachers. I
yelled myself hoarse cheering on
each group as they raced across
the water. There was a little
friendly sabotage between teams
and one raft that didn’t quite make
it home in one piece.
Our final activity of the weekend
was the flying fox & what an ex-
hilarating ride that was. First there
was the climb to the top of the
telegraph pole before taking that
giant leap of faith stepping off the
platform, confident in the fact that
the safety harness would carry you

the 250m to the bottom of the val-
ley.
We headed home shortly after
lunch promising to return to Camp
Wombaroo again another year. All
in all we had a fabulous weekend
with an exemplary group of indi-
viduals who, when grouped to-
gether, make you appreciate just
how privileged our Club is to have
them as teachers & role models.
Thanks guys for being such great
sports, great teachers and fabulous
people in general; we appreciate
everything you do for us. Thank
you also to the Penshurst RSL
Youth Swim Club for supporting
these teachers so comprehen-
sively. It’s money VERY well spent!
We can’t wait to do it all again next
season.
REPRESENTATIVE SWIMMING We
have now completed our three
Zone carnivals & the results have
been very pleasing. Our Zone
Championship carnival will be held
on December 13th & we wish all
the Penshurst RSL swimmers the
very best of luck.
We have calculated that over the
season we have had 19 new repre-
sentative swimmers, what a great
effort by our younger Club mem-
bers.
Thanks also to our parent helpers
who manned the BBQ, have taken
control of marshalling, judging,
check-starting & timekeeping. Who
made food & sold raffle tickets &
took on many other duties. It’s a
proud moment for our committee
when we see so many Penshurst
parents “on duty” at these carni-
vals.
Currently Swim Club has 97 regis-
tered members. Our squad books
are closed now to all but swim-
mers who are promoted from
within. Currently our Stroke Devel-
opment class has a few vacancies
as does our learn-to-swim pro-
gramme however, we have no
doubt both will fill in the coming
months as parents seek out a swim
school to help prepare their chil-
dren for February school swim-
ming carnivals. So, if you have
friends or family looking for a swim
school now is the time to invite
them to consider us. With the ex-
ception of siblings, our swim
school ceases to accept members
in February.

MERRY CHRISTMAS! On behalf of
the Youth Club Committee, the
Swim Club executive, the coaches,
the Austswim supervisors, the vol-
unteer teachers, the Captains and
Vice Captains, the Zone & State
representative swimmers and all
those Swim Club children in our
Learn-to-swim, Squad and Stroke
Development classes; may we wish
you all a very Merry Christmas & a
healthy & prosperous New Year.
Stay Safe, especially around water.
