What is Service Learning?

Service-learning is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines academic classroom

curriculum with meaningful service, frequently youth service, throughout the community.

Community Service

• America’s Second Harvest Food Bank• America Cancer Society

• Children’s Miracle Network

Children’s Miracle Network

• Children’s Miracle Network is Phi Mu's primary philanthropy focus. Some 160 children's hospitals nationwide benefit from collegiate and alumnae

chapter fund-raising events yearly. All monies raised stay in the local community for patient care, new equipment and research into children's diseases,

illnesses, and injuries. • We donate all of our money to Shand’s Hospital in

Gainesville, Florida.• Since 1986, Phi Mus have raised almost $4 million.

Lending a Hand• As a Phi Mu sorority, we do not only raise money for Children’s Miracle Network but we

also devote our time to the children and actually get to see where our money is going. • In August of 2007, we took a trip to Gainesville, Florida and visited Shand’s Hospital. We were able to visit with the

children and give them hats we made during recruitment.

Volleyball Tournament

This year Kappa Beta Chapter held their fourth annual

Volleyball Tournament and raised over $10,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network!

How we raised the $$

• Each Phi Mu lady was expected to raise $100.

• We went to businesses throughout the community and asked for sponsorship to help raise money.

• Refreshments were also sold at the tournament to help raise more money.

Different tasks throughout the day!

• Directing people to the parking area• Assisting with trash pick-up after every game• Getting the volleyball teams registered and

ready to play on time• Making sure that the teams had plenty of

water and food before and after their games

…taking a break from the strenuous work.

Refreshments anyone?

My ReflectionAfter seeing the children at Shand’s hospital I was

motivated to raise as much money as I possibly could.

Children’s Miracle Network really opened my eyes and makes me appreciate what I have.

I are also grateful to be in such an organization that is more than willing to go out of its way to help children in need.

Relay for Life

Kendall and I at Relay for Life

All Greek Organizations work towards the same goals!!

My Reflection

• Relay for Life meant a lot to me this year because two of our teachers have actually

gone through and survived cancer in the past two years.

• This made me want to go out and support the cause even more!

What I’ve learned

• I have learned to never take anything for granted!

• I also learned how to work in different environments and support our local

nonprofit organizations.

You’re probably wondering why I brought Oatmeal Cookies…..

• Oatmeal may actually reduce chances for certain cancers!

• Also: it helps to reduce high blood pressure, reduces the risk to two types of diabetes, helps control weight, and reduces the risk for heart

disease!!!!• AND THEY ARE YUMMY!!!!
