What is RefWorks?

In short, RefWorks is a web-based software that helps you organize your citations and prepare your reference list / bibliography: Create a personal database online Import citations automatically from Library

catalogues, online databases or web pages you find on the Internet

Organize and manage references Generate in-text citation, bibliography or reference list

in the citation style of your choice, including APA, MLA, Harvard, Chicago style and more

First Time User: Create Your RefWorks Account

1. Library Home Page E-Resources RefWorks Icon (http://www.library.ln.edu.hk/cgi-bin/luaccess?dbname=refworks )

2. Click Signup for an Individual Account on the Left Panel

At the result list or article display screen in LexisNexis Academic, look for the icon for Direct Export to RefWorks

If you have already logged in to RefWorks, the results from LexisNexis Academic will be immediately transferred to RefWorks, otherwise, you will be asked to log in.After import is completed, enter LexisNexis Academic as Database and today’s date under Retrieved Date; then click Edit Fields.

Select Source Type under Field to Add Data. Then choose All in List , set Change Field To as Electronic and click Add

1. At the Search Results in ProQuest, select which citations to keep by marking the check boxes

2. Click Export 3. Choose Export directly to RefWorks4. If you have already logged into RefWorks, the

selected ProQuest records will be imported to RefWorks immediately; if you haven’t logged in, you will be asked to login first.

5. Under “Globally Edit Fields for Imported References”, add the name of the database (e.g. ABI/Inform or Academic Research Library) and also today’s date (for APA Style, enter month, date and year: e.g. 9/28/2008) and then click “Edit Fields”

6. Then click “View Last Imported Folder” and select “Global Edit”

7. If you are using online full text, then change the Source Type to electronic (follow the last steps in the LexisNexis session above); if you need to get the full text from print copy, there is no need to change the Source Type

Import by Copy-and-Paste -- Multiple Records from Library Catalogue (1)

1. Search Library Catalogue by keywords / subject / author / title, etc.

2. Save multiple records on results list or Mark individual records on single record display

3. Click Marked List button to view previously saved / marked records.

Add Web Pages to RefWorks -- RefGrab-it (1)

RefGrab-it is a plug-in to be installed to your web browser. It helps to gather web page information to RefWorks. It’s available under Tools after you login to RefWorks

1. Download RefGrab-Itwithin RefWorks under the Tools pull-down menu.

2. Right click on RefGrab-It to bookmark link.

3. Select Add to Favorites

A hot-link appears after the RefGrab-it link is installed. To cite a particular web page, first open it in the web browser and then click the RefGrab-it button. A separate window will pop up. Click the Import button to transfer the information to RefWorks.

Create Records Manually

1. At RefWorks Menu References Add New Reference

2. Choose the desired output format in View fields used by (e.g. APA style)

3. Choose Ref Type (e.g. Web Page, Journal, Book, etc)

4. Type in the citation information and click “Save Reference”

5. Click on the Green check mark next to the field names to view the meaning of the fields and required input format

Organize Records into Folders

The Folders option is located at the menu bar below the Refworks Logo at the upper left screen

Under Folders, create your new FolderView All References or Last Imported

Folders; Select the records you want and use the Put in Folder option to store the selected records in the desired folder

1. Select Bibliography2. Select desired style from the Output Style drop-
