• It is more crucial now than ever that we ensure all students receive the support they need to reach their full potential to succeed

• Leveraging SEL to do so can help bring us one step closer to making educational equity a reality

• Family income < $36,000/year • African American, Hispanic, Native American, or

Pacific Islander race/ethnicity • First-generation college student (FGCS)• Hispanic college students are the racial/ethnic

group most likely to be FGCS

• Students who meet more criteria (based on ethnicity, income, and/or first-generation status) demonstrate progressively lower college and career readiness rates

• Studies on Hispanic FGCS have linked them to the poorest academic outcomes, as compared to FGCS in other racial/ethnic groups

• Least likely to attain a bachelor’s degree within 8 years of high school graduation

• Lowest first- to second-year persistence rates

When provided equal access, not all children are able to view the game.

• Administered ACT’s first-generation SEL assessment yearly from grades 7-12

• Measured various social and emotional skills • Included Academic Success Index (predicts

likelihood of achieving GPA > 2.0 in high school or first year of college)

• Comparison to a national sample (N = 143,937) of other test-takers

• Region One students show similar behavioral trends as those reported in the literature, but higher performance than a national sample• This is likely due to the range of

interventions provided• Region One students who scored at the lowest

levels at the beginning of the grant achieved the most gains

• SEL can help students achieve equity-based outcomes

• Ongoing partnership with Region One • Year 2 of GEAR UP grant cycle • Engagement in assessment, reporting,

intervention, and PD cycle • Purpose: to create same gains and opportunities

for underserved learners to achieve college and career readiness through SEL

• Equity in education goes deeper than providing equal education to all students

• Equity in education is providing each student with the education they need to live and thrive

• It is about ensuring equally high outcomes for all students regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, language, disability, sexual orientation, and cultural or socioeconomic background

Embedding SEL into theeducational structures through a Systems-Based Approach

ensures that all individuals share in in the responsibility for achieving equity
