How Photography Training helped me at my Workplace

• “The web is getting more visual. We need to move with the times. Let’s get more visuals, people!” The last statement was more of a policy decision by our Editor-in Chief, as he closed the meeting with a thump on the desk, rising and striding purposefully out of the conference room. I got up slowly trying to formulate a strategy that I should be readying for my team. More visuals. Right!
• I entered my office. It was full of ten anxious faces. All digital journalists. “Okay, people. Who knows photography? I mean, the real deal, not just shooting selfies and bit pictures with your smartphones.”

• Not a single hand shot up. I looked around. Here was a group of multimedia journos working for a reputed online publication and not one knew professional photography! “Did you not take DSLR photography training during your studies?” A few of them muttered something but no concrete answers were given.

• Photography, although an art, is intricately linked with scientific and technological advancements. You need to keep yourself abreast of the latest advances in photography to really use your skills as a photographer to click meaningful pictures. I decided to build upon my bare basic knowledge of photography which I had gathered during my days at Journalism College.
• I had attended a few photography workshops and seminars and I found them extremely helpful. But as I rose up the ranks in my work place, I found little time to do field work and hence could not continue to keep pace with advances in photography. But after my Editor’s talk, I decided to get admitted to an advanced course in photography.

• I found out from an online search that there were many good institutes offering photography training in India. I searched local and found out a reputed institute close to my office. In the first few days, I brushed my basic knowledge of DSLR photography and in the next few weeks thoroughly enjoyed the advanced training in the finer aspects of DSLR photography.
• Within a month, I was a certified and trained photographer and I used this newfound confidence to go on the field to get some pictures. My editor was apprehensive in the beginning, not wanting to send a senior person like me on the field. But when I made him see reason, he agreed for a pilot project.

• I encouraged my team to take up a photography course and made them realize the importance of photography training in journalism, digital or traditional. Today, our publication has become more “visual,” thanks to the amazing pictures my team gets on a daily basis. Photography training has imbibed a new vigour into our publication and we are back to where we belonged. At the top.
