I have been a Governor at this school for six years, as well as a Primary School Governor in Greenwich, and feel that the knowledge and experience I have gained will help in this role. Having worked in both the secondary and primary educaon sector in the London Boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Greenwich over many years, I have an excellent understanding of the complex issues that schools face. Ifeel privileged to have beenelected as the new Chair ofGovernors of Sir John Cass

Red Coat School. I have been aGovernor at this school for sixyears, as well as a PrimarySchool Governor in Greenwich,

and feel that the knowledge and experience I havegained will help in this role.

Having worked in both the secondary and primaryeducation sector in the London Boroughs of TowerHamlets and Greenwich over many years, I have an

excellent understanding of the complex issues thatschools face. AStonewall campaignpromoted byPremiership footballers

in last weekend’s fixtures wasreplicated by the Sir John CassRed Coat football teams thisweekend. All of the playerswere given the funky rainbowlaces to show their support ofStonewalls Sporting campaignfor LGBT players. They were agood luck charm as all threeteams were undefeatedagainst George Green School.

The Year 10 team continuedtheir impressive unbeatenleague run with another greatwin 8‐1 against George Greenwhilst the Year 8 team alsomanaged a 4‐1 win againstGeorge Green. The Year 7team were denied a win inthe last couple of minutesagainst George Green andended up drawing 3‐3, withFardin being the player of thematch with his defensiveheading and robust tackling.

The boys showed theirrespect in abundance andmade the school proud,however one pupil, Diangelowent the extra mile. Not onlycontent with having laces inhis shoes, he transformed thelace into a designer hairband.

Congratulations Siumfor representing EssexCounty’s U‐14 Hockey Team!

Sium has been selected to be part of the EssexCounty U‐14 elite hockey training squad. He hasmade great strides over the last couple of years in

reaching this far and will hopefully fulfil his potential inrepresenting the Essex at the Eastern CountiesChampionship later in May. Sium currently plays adulthockey with the Tower Hamlets Hockey Club everySaturday, along with other Sir John Cass Red Coatstudents. He is a rising star amongst his fellow peers andhas contributed immensely to the club’s successfulseason this year as they currently sit top of the table.First round of the county of matches take place against,Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridge in January. We wish himall the best.

On Tuesday 17thOctober, sixteen yearseven, eight and nine

girls attended a basketballtournament held at the UELSportsdock. The girls wereready to go on arrival and aftersome practice and words ofencouragement the girls tookto the court for their first gameagainst Raines. However, thegame did not go as planned

with Raines leading at halftime 14‐0. The half‐time talkseemed to give the girls a bitof motivation and theymanaged to secure a free‐throw, gaining 1 point and onlyallowing Raines to score 5points, meaning the final scorewas 19‐1. With a team change,the girls then went on to playOaklands, and managed astrong win which lead to them

heading into the semi‐finalsagainst Bishop Challoner. Thegirls started strong for thisgame, with a lead of 4‐2 athalf‐time. However, after a fewchanges the final scorefinished at 4‐8 to Bishop. Withthis, the girls then played forthird place and managed a winagainst Central FoundationGirls School!

Year 12 Psychology ClassWorking Hard!

Trip to AuschwitzThe trip to Auschwitz was the second part of the Lessons

from Auschwitz project. Students attended a seminarwhere they learned about Jewish life pre‐Nazi era and

listened to a Holocaust survivor. We then went on the 24 hourtrip to Auschwitz. We met at school at 3am and made our wayto Oswiecim ‐ the local town near Auschwitz ‐ where thestudents learned about Jewish life pre‐Nazi. We saw old shopsand houses that used to belong to Jews. We also saw the siteof a synonogue that was burned down.

Then we visited Auschwitz, followed by a visit to Birkenau. Wesaw where the prisoners were kept and the famous displays ofhair and glasses that were from the victims. We actually wentinside the gas chamber at Auschwitz and looked at the remainsof the ones at Birkenau (as the Nazis had tried to destroy them

when they knew the allies were coming). We also saw wherethe Jews were kept and where they slept with the double sizedbunk beds. We ended the day with a Memorial Service atBirkenau where a rabbi said prayers and we lit candles for thevictims.

The students got to see what they have learned about at KS3and KS4 in 'real life'. The educaters and tour guides wereconstantly giving us information and personal stories of someof the victims.

The final part of the project is a second seminar, where we willreflect on the visit and discuss how we will diseminate whatwe have learned.

Students were presented with three keyquestions. They completed a treasure huntset up around the classroom to find the

answers and then had to report back as a class.Students were given opportunities to keepadjusting their oral response until they developedtheir academic literacy. They then did an extendedpiece of writing to answer the three big questions.Students found, what usually is a less engagingresearch methods’ topic, really enjoyable, engagingand exciting. They were extremely mature andworked really well together ‐ a culture ofcollaborative learning was really welldemonstrated. As a teacher I was extremely proudof them. Well done Year 12 Psychology!

Smart Days: Smart Choice October has been a very busy

month for students at SJCR withample opportunities for students

across the key stages. Our mission toeducate students with key skills whichwill benefit them pre and post 16education with our Smart Days, kicked offwith the Education Business Partnership(EBP) and MDI Associates Limited for thewhole of year 8.

The Financial Skills Challenge aimed todevelop pupils’;

• Employability skills: communication,team work, planning, independence,problem solving.

• Emotional capabilities: self‐esteem,confidence, improved decision making,autonomy, responsibility.

• Financial education: how finance playsan important part in people’s lives,managing money, budgeting, credit/debt,

calculating value for money, financialterms and ideas.

The event was a great success withstudents and facilitators walking awayfeeling they gained a lot out of the day. The Transformation Trust and Barclaysdelivered an inspiring workshop todevelop Year 10 students’ soft skills.

Delivery of the event fell onto Efe who isa mentor and runs her own charity.Students looked at key developmentareas for education and the world ofwork in preparationfor work experience:Knowing yourself,OvercomingChallenges,Assertiveness,Workplace Challenge,Workplace Behaviourand Communication +body language.

Students left with a new sense ofpurpose and the interactive sessionhelped them challenge some of the coreissues which they might not have beenable to address, such as anxiety andpublic speaking. The school and sixthform continue to deliver workshops tohelp our students be successful in theireducation pursuits as well as develop theskills they will need to secure the careerswhich they aspire to excel in, in thefuture. Please keep your eyes on thenotice boards and on the shared drive forupcoming events and opportunities.

Shared Outcomes is a small charitable programme runby the charity ‘The Institute of Statecraft.’ They workwith young people across the country enabling them to

fulfil their potential and increasing their life opportunities.They have a strong relationship with the Army and some ofthe activities are run by them.

They are running a two day and night residential trip for 25‐30 students (aged between 14‐18) from Sir John Cass RedCoat School, offering them the opportunity to attendPirbright Army Camp to take part in a ‘Challenge Weekendwith Shared Outcomes and London District (The Army inLondon)’ during the February half‐term; 9th – 11th February2018.

We received a lot of interest at our information day, andstudents have already returned application forms and parentslips for the Parent Information Evening being held at theschool on the 18th December 2017 at 5pm. This promises tobe a weekend full of exciting and challenging activities suchas:

• assault courses• adventure training• night‐navigation exercises• camping overnight• taking part in workshops to build understanding between

people of different faiths and backgrounds

SJCR GrowingScheme Update

Mr Rothon – Sixth Form Registrar

At the moment we have completed the raised beds(outside of the sixth form entrance). These werekindly constructed and installed, free of charge, by

Crossrail/ Skanska 360. The soil/ fertiliser was donated bythe Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park. B&Q have providedus with around £400 worth of equipment (tools, hoses,water butt, protective gloves, etc.) In addition to this, theWorshipful Company of Gardeners have offered us seedsand plants from their nursery when we are ready.

We have joined the Capital Growth Scheme and havealready achieved Level 1 status with the RoyalHorticultural Society's School Gardening Campaign. Wewill be ready to apply for Level 2 once we get someplants in the ground!

We have also recently secured agenerous £1000 grant from Tesco’sBags of Help Scheme, which we hopeto use for some gardening equipment,planters, seeds and plants.

A huge thank you to all of thosecompanies mentioned for their contribution towardsestablishing our Growing Scheme.

It may be a little cold to start with sowing the seeds andplants now, but we should be good to go in early spring.

We’ve had a number of musical performancesthis term, including Jonas Martin playing thepiano in the whole school assembly on 15th

November and Bianca Del Fabbro Alvarez playing thepiano during the upper school assembly on 13thNovember. The Steel Orchestra also performed on 13thNovember at the school’s annual prize giving event.

On 2nd November, Mohammod Ibrahim Bashir provideda solo piano performance playing “Fragments of Hearts”by composer Joe Hisaishi, and on 19th October the Year

7 Vocal group gave a performance at St Dunstan’sChurch for Kenton Day.

All performances were fantastic, and we hope to hearmore from our students in the coming term.

We’d also like to welcome our new singing tutor, SelinaAndrews, who is leading a Yr7 vocal group and providingsmall group lessons to those students involved. Pleaseget in contact with the Music Department if you wouldlike your child to join.

Year 8 Science –Homework ProjectThe whole of year 8 took part inthe year 8 Science homeworkproject on endangered specieswhere they had to create a modelhabitat for their chosenendangered species. All studentscompleted the homework projectto a high standard and it was verysuccessful. All students were keento share their information bookletsand models with the class.

SJCR in the CommunityAt the start of the term, 16th

September 2017, GatewayHousing Association chose to

use Sir John Cass Red Coat School andour facilities to host their annualresidents fair. The day was a greatsuccess with preparations being startedfrom the previous day with the help ofour students, who came in numbers onboth days to support staff andresidents.

On the Saturday, visitors to the fairreached into the hundreds withactivities, food and entertainment forall.

Our students were a credit to theschool with the managers of GatewayHousing Association commending themon their hard work and giving up theirweekend to volunteer for the event bystewarding, henna painting andcleaning before and after the event.

Overall the fair was a great success andhelped to cement the school’scommitment to help the widercommunity. Well done to our studentswho were involved, it was a greatopportunity for them to get involvedwith, and helped to prepare them forthe world of work.

4. Building Self-Esteem Mastering new skills can help build confidence in children. By participating in after-school activities, they can build their self-esteem in a relaxed setting as their activities provide the opportunity to be successful in something that they are passionate about. 5. University and Job Applications Another benefit of after-school activities is that they look great on applications. In addition to academic performance, many universities and employers look at what activities students are involved in outside of school as a way to get a full picture of what each student is like. 6. Setting Goals After-school activities present opportunities for children to develop their goal-setting skills. Most extracurricular activities involve reaching or achieving a goal, whether it be the lead actor in a school play, winning a league or coming in first place in a debate. As a result, these activities help encourage students to work towards achieving those goals, while having fun at the same time. 7. Teamwork Sports teams, clubs and activities all require children to work together towards a common goal. By participating in these activities, your children develop the skills they need in order to successfully work with others. In addition, extracurricular activities let children build relationships and socialise with peers who share their interests. 8. Academic Performance Recent studies show a correlation between improved grades, involvement in after-school activities.

Live streaming is a live visual broadcastover the internet. All you need to beable to live stream is an internet

enabled device, like a smart phone or tablet,and a platform (such as website or app) tobroadcast on. At the click of a button, youcan be streaming to hundreds, or thousands,of viewers.

With the popularity of live streaming everincreasing and with children and adults bothtaking part, it is important as a parent orcarer to understand what risks children andyoung people may face when live streamingand the practical steps that you can take tomake your child’s online experience safer.

WHAT MAKES LIVE STREAMING RISKYFOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE?

Reduced inhibition online – Children can feelmore confident when they are online as theyfeel somewhat protected by the screen. Thiscan result in children engaging in behaviourthat they would not otherwise do in ‘real life’.Your child’s developmental stage –dependent on their age, your child will needdifferent levels of support. Children’s brainsare continuously developing and your advicewill need to grow as they do. In their offlineworld, children are often taught from anearly age to do as they are told and followadult instruction e.g. parents, teachers,

family friends. Some offenders within livestreaming platforms rely on the acceptanceof this ‘rule’ and use young people’s trust inadults to abuse them.

Live streaming is ‘in the moment’ – Childrenand young people often do things in the heatof the moment and act on impulse withoutthinking of the consequences – just likeoffline. For example, they may sharepersonal information when asked or dothings that in another situation they wouldn’tdo, such as share something private or evensexual.

Tactics such as trickery and flattery –Offenders use tactics to try and get childrento do things that they otherwise may not do.

HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CHILD STAYSAFE WHEN LIVE STREAMING?

There are some practical steps you can taketo help keep your child safe if they are usingan app or website with a live streamingfunction.

Stay involved in their internet use – Talk toyour child about what they are doing online;what they are enjoying, what they arelearning, who are they interacting with andthe new things they have discovered.

Use webcam and devices in public spaces.As young people develop, they often seekmore privacy and autonomy in both theironline and offline world. However, it’simportant to consider whether children aredevelopmentally ready to be leftunsupervised using devices. Young childrendo not have reasoning skills to keepthemselves safe independently, especiallywhen overpowered by the intelligence andmanipulation of offenders

Privacy and safety settings ‐ If your child isusing an app with a live streaming functiongo through the privacy and safety settingstogether, setting them to make sure only thefriends they know in ‘real life’ can view theirprofile.

Be wary of requests to chat in private –Offenders may try and move children from apublic area of an app to a private area tohave conversations that are likely to be lessmoderated.

Safe and trusted adults and advice ‐ Helpyour child to identify adults that are there tohelp from ones who they do not know or thatmay want something in return.

Make sure your child knows where to go forsupport and where to report ‐ Children cansometimes feel they are to blame ifsomething goes wrong online. Remind yourchild that they can always speak to you or anadult they trust if they are worried no matterwhat may have happened. Talk to themabout reporting directly within the app orplatform they are using and that they canreport to CEOP (The Child Exploitation andOnline Protection Centre) if they’reconcerned about contact from an adult.

Live streaming: responding to the risks

There is a smartphone secrecy appthat looks like a calculator but can beused to conceal photos and video

content:

• The app looks like a regular smartphone calculator

• Once a passcode is entered the app reveals images and videos secretly stored on the device

There are a growing number of apps thatare designed to look like innocent appsthat can hide secret content. These appsare becoming increasingly popular withyoung people.

The Calculator+ app looks similar to aregular calculator but allows users to inputa passcode to reveal a vault of hiddenimages. All files are securely stored in theApp and remain completely private andconfidential.

In the app store the Calculator+ app isdescribed as ‘Secret Calculator hides yourphotos & videos behind a workingcalculator’. This app is one of many secretphoto vaults that are being used to concealimages and videos from parents.

If you are concerned please talk to yourchild, establish a dialogue with them tohelp them feel that they can talk to youabout their problems.
