Dr. Carl McClellan Hill was Hampton Institutes 11th president. He served as Interim President from 1976-1977 and became president from 1977-1978. He taught science at Hampton Institute and also was the 2nd alumnus to serve as Hampton president.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Hampton Institute in Organic Chemistry and taught high school science at the George P. Phenix Laboratory School of Hampton University, where he later became principal. He earned his masters and doctorate degrees in organic chemistry from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.

During his career Dr. Hill served as assistant professor of chemistry at North Carolina A&T State University; dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and dean of faculty at Tennessee State University and president of Kentucky State University in 1962. He died in 1995.
