General Samuel Chapman Armstrong was the founder and 1st principal/president of Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in 1868.


Dr. Hollis B. Frisell Was the 2nd president of Hampton Institute serving from 1893 to 1918. He came to Hampton Institute as the Chaplain for the school and later became president.



Dr. James Edward Gregg was the 3rd principal of Hampton Institute from 1918-1929.




Dr. George Perley Phenix was the 4th president of Hampton Institute. In 1908 He served as Vice Principal of the Institute and Acting Principal twice in 1918. Dr. George Perley Phenix was the first to use the term president.


Dr. Arthur Howe became Hampton's 5th president in 1930. Dr. Arthur Howe was married to General Samuel Chapman Armstrong's youngest daughter Margaret Armstrong. Dr. Hollis B. Frissell, Hampton's 2nd Principal performed the marriage ceremony.


Dr. Malcolm Shaw Maclean was the 6th president of Hampton Institute.




Dr. Ralph P. Bridgman was the 7th president of Hampton Institute from 1944-1948.








Dr. Alonzo G. Moron Was the 8th President of Hampton Institute and the first African American to hold the position at the college. He served From 1948-1959. He was also the first Hampton Institute graduate to become president of the school.



Dr. Jerome H. Holland was the 9th president of Hampton Institute.



Dr. Roy Davage Hudson was Hampton Institutes 10th president at age 39. He served from 1970-1976. he resigned to persue his career in Neuropharmacology.




Dr. Carl McClellan Hill was Hampton Institutes 11th president. He served as Interim President from 1976-1977 and became president from 1977-1978. He taught science at Hampton Institute and also was the 2nd alumnus to serve as Hampton president.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Hampton Institute in Organic Chemistry and taught high school science at the George P. Phenix Laboratory School of Hampton University, where he later became principal. He earned his masters and doctorate degrees in organic chemistry from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.

During his career Dr. Hill served as assistant professor of chemistry at North Carolina A&T State University; dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and dean of faculty at Tennessee State University and president of Kentucky State University in 1962. He died in 1995.
