Abstract

Shelter Design for a Changing Paradigm

Over the past 5 years, animal shelters across the world have faced increasing challenges to managecommunity and public perception around companion animals in humans’ lives. In many cases, animal sheltershave been unable to meet some of these challenges through new programs due to limitations with their currentfacilities.

To meet this changing paradigm, the design needs to consider the animal shelter or pound as a communityresource centre (a destination) where shelter operators can facilitate engagement with Foster Carers, otherRescue Groups, Volunteers, Animal Transportation and other government agencies. The design must beadaptable to allow the shelter operators to reinvent their spaces to meet the continual change in programs toenhance animal outcomes and community engagement.

Redefining the space for a community shelter or pound requires challenging the status quo.
