US patent 8,039,105 has been granted for the process to prepare unique, novel precipitated silicas.
One of the outcomes is an engineered particle “EXP 4115-1”.
We expect this unique particle will offer customers highly desired print performance on multiple platforms along with High Speed inkjet printers. The inclusion of EXP 4115-1 into your coating allows excellent image quality with dye and pigment based inks.
But we believe there is more…

The AERODISP® fumed oxide dispersion and/or EXP 4115-1 can simply be added into the size press formulation by itself or as a base coating for a subsequent online coating process. Silica as a co-pigment forms a very thin microporous layer.

• Increased gamut and color brilliance
• Better color fixation (dye & pigment)
• Superb dry time and resolution
Commercial Printing + High Speed InkjetCoating+Silica Addition as a Co-Pigment
EXP 4115-1 provides absorption and a “spacer” functionality to increase ink absorption
Conventional coating formulations can be improved for digital printing
• Gloss, semi-gloss, satin and matte paper for High Speed Inkjet presses
• Applicable for Flexography, Offset Lithography and Thermography processes
• One coating for hybrid printing applications – multiple finishes
Guide formulation (modify as appropriate)
• 90 – 80 parts calcium carbonate (or other pigment)(ex: Hydrocarb® 90)
• 10 – 20 parts EXP 4115-1
• 5 – 20 parts binder (Poly-Vinyl Alcohol, Starch,Latexes and blends thereof)+ additives…(depending on requirements)
1 – 12 g/m2 coating weight (based on available coating equipment)

Hybrid printing
• Flexography (Packaging): Tailor your finish - matte or satin versions
• Offset Lithography (Transactional/Promo): The calendaring of a coated paper increases surface strength which is critical to run these high speed presses
• Thermography (Direct and Transfer): Silica is commonly used to provide thermal insulation, prevent pre-development of the leuco dyes and also maintain the cleanliness of the print head
Production flexibility
• EXP 4115 can deliver a matte, satin or semi-gloss finish to your product without sacrificing print performance. The coating can be calendared and/or super-calendared. This allows your production to use a single coating and achieve multiple finishes and reduces the need to prepare multiple coatings
• Apply as little as 1 – 3 g/m² at the size press for an enhanced commodity paper
• Need higher quality imaging? Apply 6 – 12 g/m² using rod, blade, gravure, curtain, film press, etc. coaters
EXP 4115-1 is a Truly Unique Silica
