Introduction

• In 2009-10, National HOSA will offer 57 events in 6 event categories.

• Check with your state advisor for the events to be offered in your state.

• Then join us on June 23-26 for the 2010 HOSA National Leadership Conference…

Event Changes and Updates• HOSA is pleased to offer a number of changes

in event offerings and details – all aimed at improving the competitive event experience for HOSA members.

• By popular request, all two-part rating sheets are now one.

• Be sure HOSA members study and understand the new and improved event guidelines.

Medical Assisting

• The Administrative Medical Assisting and Medical Assisting Clinical events have been combined.

• Skills were taken from both events.

Clinical Specialty

• Major event changes!• New pre-judging component to assure

consistency.• Two rating sheets combined into one.• Competitor sits with judge and reviews skill

(DVD) with judge during interview.• Competitor brings his/her own laptop or DVD

player.

Nursing Assisting and Personal Care

• Competitors will bring their own linens (sheets, draw sheets and pillow cases).

• HOSA will provide blankets.

• Competitors may use a HOSA blanket or bring their own.

CERT Skills

• Event title change.• Encouragement

for state winning teams to complete a CERT classroom course before the NLC.

Public Health Emergency Preparedness

• Addition of a preliminary round.• Top 12 team advance to finals in front of an

audience.• Topic for 2009-10:

Recent outbreaks and incidents

Epidemiology

• Website resource links were updated to improve clarity.

• Careers in Public Health site changed.

• Test plan updated.

NEW EVENT:MRC Partnership

• Local chapter partnership with Medical Reserve Corps.

• Team event• Emergency Preparedness category

Medical Photography

• Major changes!• Judges will judge print photos and NOT digital

projection.• This does not change the competitor

requirements for the print copies and DVD – just the judging process.

• Includes the addition of a competitor-created index card label for Showcase photo gallery.

Job Seeking Skills and Interviewing Skills

• Two rating sheets combined into one.

• Competitors bring their cover letter and resume to the event orientation.

• Judges will rate the cover letter, resume, application and job interview.

Researched Persuasive Speaking

• Two rating sheets combined into one with one set of judges.

• Speech 4 minutes long.• No more judge questions.• Topics for 2009-10

Advertising prescription drugs

Career Health Display

• Competitor question and answer portion has been deleted. The rest of the event remains the same.

Health Education

• The videotaping portion has been deleted for competition.

• There will be one rating sheet.

• Four pages have been added to the notebook for a presentation outline with photos.

Community Awareness

• One set of judges will evaluate the notebook and interview.

• Two rating sheets are combined into one.• The judge questions have been deleted.

Public Service Announcement• New – competitors bring their own laptop or

DVD player for showing PSA. • Topic for 2009-10: Let’s Get Ready America– www.ready.gov is a national public service

advertising campaign designed to empower Americans to prepare for emergencies.
