Three Rivers Resort Quiet Bar
I Work Hard. I am never lacking for ideas. I revel in the barrage of new concepts when I have a different project. I embrace life to Foster Inspiration. The end user is at the center of every project. I don’t kowtow to convention. I Innovate. I love troubleshooting. I appreciate the point where all of my ideas transform into something better, something implementable. I d o n ’ t d o c r o s s w o r d p u z z l e s . I n s te a d I Solve Problems. Design is about knowing when to compromise. It is also about not giving up before the end product is as good as it can be. When there is something I do not understand I Figure It Out. I never allow myself to be paralyzed by ignorance, because I have a voracious appetite for learning. The most important thing in life is to Never Stop Growing.

Hospitality Urban Food Alliance
01
A building devoted to improving the lives of restaurant workers and the surrounding community
Urban Food Alliance
I would like to introduce you to the urban food alliance. This project is rooted in my research, which looked at the way certain standard specifications in commercial kitchens leads to chronic health and wellness issues in restaurant workers. Particularly prevalent are musculoskeletal disorders that make it difficult to last more than 10 years in the industry, respiratory disorders, falls, cuts and burns, as well as stress disorders. The client is a coalition of chefs and farmers, teamed up with Grow Pittsburgh, that want to use food, a universal need, to improve the lives of restaurant workers and the surrounding South Oakland community.1
Market Level Floor PlanThe southern ground floor hosts a market, ending the food desert in the community. Inspiration was taken from an aerial photograph of farm country. All dividers are movable, providing flexibility for varying needs.

Overall Building ModelFor this project I built a model at 1/16”=1’0”. In order to show the skin that I created based on the inspiration photo, I used transparent adhesive on a frame of plastic and wire mesh. The roof undulates in response to the greenhouse design.
Ground Floor ModelThe model was laser cut, and hand assembled. The floor plan was etched onto the basswood floor.
6
Small Restaurants Floor PlanThe southern upper floor houses two smaller restaurants with distinct but compatible aesthetics. The circulation to the restaurants passes by the curved glass walls with views into the kitchens. One restaurant features communal dining and a relaxed atmosphere, while the other embraces nightlife.

Second Floor ModelThe wall of the model includes the framed views into the kitchen that allow diners to appreciate the labor of the kitchen workers while maintaining the workers’ privacy.
Greenhouse Floor ModelThe greenhouse provides not only produce for the restaurants below, but also provides a calming space for visitors while waiting for a table or eating their lunch. The space houses the rainwater collection tanks, as well as bench seating for guests. The roof can accomodate trees if needed by the resaturants, and is supported by columns designed to interpret a cherry tree in structural steel.
10
Southern Roof Level Floor PlanThe roof serves as a greenhouse providing produce for the restaurants below. In addition there are rainwater collection tanks for crop irrigation. The greenhouse is open to the public, so customers can take in views while waiting for their table.
11
Northern Roof Level Floor PlanThe light wells are created by the sides of the plant beds, allowing for use of the space.

Rivers of glass emphasize an elegant, inviting destination
Three Rivers Resort
The Three Rivers Resort is an engaging space grounded in its geographical location. A dark gray bamboo floor inset with a mosaic of Pittsburgh’s geography highlights the circulation on the first floor. Soft gray neutrals with accents of blue and yellow were inspired by a visit to the site. The space is modern and elegant, while maintaining a clean, comfortable look. A glass chandelier, suspended from the second level and following the lines of the flooring detail, supplies drama. Local glass artist Daviea Davis inspired the stained glass railing. Metallic finishes highlight upscale furnishings covered in complementary fabrics. The result is a rich, elegant environment that imparts a feeling of luxury, while remaining inviting and comfortable.

Applied DesignFurniture Design and Construction with Artemis Design Build
Furniture Design is a passion of mine, and I initiated a furniture design and construction independent study with Artemis Design Build to gain practical experience in this field. Along with Brian Sieffert, I designed a bench, dining table, and a wet bar that was pre-sold to a client to retrofit a building in Pittsburgh’s South Side. This client had a style that was industrial and modern, but with organic elements. Of importance was a respect for the raw material, the grain of the wood, the iridescence of the steel when it is rolled along hot rollers, the smooth texture of glass reinforced concrete. In the end, I assisted with constructing the furniture designed, and assisted with the installation of the furniture at the Home and Garden Show.

Alexander McQueen Flagship
Inspirations from McQueen's career provide shimmer, layers, contrast, luxury, symmetry, drama, movement, and texture
Alexander McQueen was a legendary artist whose medium was fashion. His use of nature, history, and culture as inspiration for his work transformed the fashion industry. My goal for this project was to create a showcase for the McQueen line that did not distract from the product, but accentuated it. I chose elements from my favorite McQueen creations, and used them to re-imagine the way clothes and accessories are presented to the client.

Universal Living CondoA family home that engages the senses with rhythm and color
This was a group project with Ashley Bertovich and Ghadah Alghanmi. The clients for this project are a multi-generational blended family. The father is a composer with a degenerative eye disorder. The goal was to create space for every member of the family, as well as accommodate the multiple musicians in the family. In addition, attention was paid to aging in place, as this is a long-term residence for the parents. Finishes were chosen for acoustical and light transmission qualities, and reduction of glare was a priority. The contrast of cool blues and warm orange notes is carried throughout the space, balanced with neutrals. A custom ceiling was created based on Le Corbusier’s Ronchamp to bring light into the interior rooms. High-end furnishings impart a modern, uncluttered feel. 25

The corners throughout the main circulation were beveled to assist with navigation. Space planning was challenging, since a family of seven was arranged in nine hundred square feet.

The ceiling was designed to increase the natural light in the interior spaces of the condo. The dramatic ceiling design in the central circulation space is based on the owners’ love of classical music.

This work/live condo was designed to balance the dual functions of the space. I used the kitchen as a buffer between both zones.
