Community Helpers: The Tools We Use At Work

Speech and Language Lesson Plan Activities

Activities

Goal

Ideas for home:

During this week and also

next week we are reading an

adaptive book called Tools

We Use At Work. In this

book students learn about the

various tools used by the

community workers we have

been studying in class.

After reading the book we

played a fun game which you

can play at home too. See

ideas for home.

A. Label vocabulary:

-Nouns: chef, policeman,

fireman, teacher, doctor,

veterinarian, scissors, comb,

garbage bag, gloves, band aid,

medicine, stethoscope,

hammer, drill, wrench, letters,

mailbox, toothpaste,

toothbrush etc.

-Verbs: working,

baking/cooking, hammering,

teaching, etc.

B. Receptive Language:

Have students identify “what”

tools the various community

helpers use given the various

pictures of the tools from the

story.

C. Expressive Language: Have

your child label the helpers

and use a sentence to say what

tool the helper uses (i.e. The

mailman uses letters).

Play the game we played at

school. Get a large pot, a

wooden spoon and a blindfold

of some kind (i.e. bandana).

Next find various objects

around the house that different

community workers use

(band aid, spatula, garbage

bag etc.) . Put the blindfold

over your child’s eyes & give

them the wooden spoon. Next

hide an item under the pot.

Have your child crawl on the

floor tapping their spoon until

it hits the pot. When they find

the pot, have them remove the

blindfold and find what is

under the pot. See if they can

tell you “Who” uses the item.

If they have trouble you can

give them a choice of two.

(i.e. Does the doctor use it or

the mailman?)

Have fun and enjoy your time

together
