What does DoDI 1322.26 require?

4

Some Requirements fromDoDI 1322.26

• All acquired or developed systems and content packages shall conform to SCORM (current version)

• All acquired or developed SCORM-conformant content packages shall– Include metadata– Be registered in the ADL Registry– Be maintained in DoD Components’

repositories that are searchable and accessible

What is the ADL Registry?

6

ADL Registry Definition

• A central search point for DoD training content

• The digital equivalent of a library card catalog– Contains all of the cards (registered

entries) that contain a standard set of information (metadata) about all of the books (training content) in the library (repository)

7

ADL Registry Requirements

• ADL Registry-defined metadata about your content– Plus additional LOM metadata, if desired

Your organization’s local repository stores the content. The ADL Registry stores

metadata records about the content.

What Should I Register?

10

Register All New Content

• Content packages– Courses, aggregations, and SCOs that

others could share, reuse, or repurpose• Others are more likely to reuse small pieces

of content than larger ones

• Collections of learning objectives– Courses– Modules– Units– Other…

11

Register Legacy ContentThat Is Useful to Others - 1

• Applicable to or required by multiple services or other organizations within DoD– Combating Trafficking in Persons– Combat Care for Blast Injuries– Tactical: Patrolling, Defensive Operations

• Non-government specific– Accounting– Leadership

– Medical– Compliance

12

Register Legacy ContentThat Is Useful to Others - 2

• Governed by Federal, rather than DoD policy– Air traffic control– Hazardous materials transportation– Federal acquisition regulations

• Not weapon-system specific– Principles of navigation (flight or naval

training)– HWMMV maintenance

13

Register Legacy ContentThat Is Useful to Others - 3

• Other guidance (in PDF files)– Style Guides

• Defense Ammunition Center e-Learning Style Guide

– Glossaries• ADL Terminology

– Reference Manuals• SCORM Best Practices Guide for

Content Developers

Content developers don’t need to

focus on these fields!

Where Do I Start?

24

Use a Team Approach

• Instructional designers don’t need to be XML gurus– They know the content, audience, and

application

• XML gurus don’t need to be training experts – They know the technical specifications

and requirements

• Work together throughout the process to be successful

25

Apply “Constraints”

• Standardize and limit – Metadata fields

– Entries within metadata fields

– Metadata generation process/workflow• What do instructional designer write?• What do the XML gurus create?

• Document team policies and procedures in a Style Guide– Defense Ammunition Center e-Learning

Style Guide

26

Divide Responsibilities

• Instructional Designer– Title– Description– Keywords– Version, Status– Author

• Contact Information

– Cost, Copyright– And more…

• XML Guru– Content

Identifier– File formats– Location– Platform

requirements

27

Use a Content Librarian

• Standardizes the creation and

maintenance of metadata records for

assets, SCOs, aggregations, and

content packages

• Works with ISD and XML guru to

ensure accurate and effective

tagging of all materials
