Multiplying Decimals

What Multiplication looks likeThere are multiple ways to express

multiplication:

3.4 x 53.4 • 53.4 * 53.4(5)(3.4)(5)

Steps1) Count how many digits are AFTER

the decimal in the problem.

2) Multiply like normal (ignoring the decimals)

3) Place decimal in the product (Answer) with the total number of digits behind the decimal

Example 114.3 x 0.81

Example 23.4 x 2.1 x 0.8

Example 3At your part-time job, you earn

$7.30 per hour. You work for two and a half hours. How much money do you earn?

What division looks likeThere are 3 ways to write 1.2 divided by

Vocabulary

Steps1. If there is a decimal in the divisor, move

the decimal all the way to the right turning the decimal into a whole number.

2. If you move the decimal in the divisor, you MUST move the decimal in the dividend to the right the same number of digits ( may need to add 0’s)

3. Take the decimal in the dividend straight up into the quotient

4. Divide.

Example 12.064 ÷ 0.24

Example 2You use 0.6 lbs of bananas in each

smoothie. How many smoothies can you make with 3.12 lbs of bananas?

With a partner – Example 312.42 ÷ 5.4

On your own – Example 567.84 ÷ 0.64
