WhatisaRegisteredGraduateStudentOrganization?

ARegisteredGraduateStudentOrganizationisagroupofgraduatestudentsthatarecommittedtoenrichingthe

learningenvironmentthroughextracurricularprogramsandactivitiesfortheentireBostonCollegegraduatestudent

community.RegisteredGraduateStudentOrganizationsareopentoallcurrentlyenrolledBostonCollegegraduate

students.Noorganizationwillbeallowedtoinstituteorexercisediscriminatorypractices.

SixoftheeightBCgraduateschoolshaverepresentativegovernmentsthatareregisteredwiththeOfficeofGraduate

StudentLife(OGSL)andarefundedbytheGraduateStudentAssociation(GSA)accordingtotheannualheadcount

withinthatparticularschool(thelawschoolandtheWoodsschoolarenotincludedinthisprocess).Someofthese

governmentshavesubgroupsthatexistunderneaththemandarefundedatthediscretionoftheschoolgovernment

organization.Thesesubgroupsusuallyfocusonaspecificprogramorpopulationofstudentswithinthatschool.For

example,theGraduateTechnologyClubisasubgroupoftheGraduateManagementAssociation,thegovernmentfor

graduatestudentsintheCarrollSchoolofManagement.Organizationsthatareconsideredsubgroupsofanyschool

governmentarenoteligibletoregisterasindependentorganizationswithOGSL.

InordertobeconsideredforregistrationthroughOGSLasanewgraduatestudentorganization,thegroupshouldnot

betiedtoanyparticularacademicschoolorprogram,andmustbeopentoallBCgraduatestudentsregardlessoftheir

programofstudy(ex.TheGraduateDanceOrganization).Also,pleasekeepinmindthatnewgraduatestudent

organizationsarenotguaranteedtoreceivefundingfromtheGSA.

Allorganizationsareresponsibleforabidingbytherulesandregulations(academic,financial,etc.)thatgovernGraduate

StudentOrganizations.Registrationofanorganizationisinnowayanimplicitapprovaloftheactivity,views,orstances

thatmaybetakenbyGraduateStudentOrganizationsortheirmembers.ThemembershipandleadershipofStudent

Organizationsaresolelyresponsiblefortheviews,stances,andactivityoftheorganization.Anorganizationmust

acknowledgethatitsprograms,events,views,andactivities,ortheviews,opinions,ideas,oractionsofthosewhomits

membersinvitetotheUniversity,donotimplysupportoracceptancebyBostonCollege.

WhatarethebenefitsofbeingaRegisteredGraduateStudentOrganization?

RegisteredGraduateStudentOrganizationsworkwiththeOfficeofGraduateStudentLifetoattendtotheintellectual

andsocialgrowthanddevelopmentofmembersoftheBostonCollegecommunity.Giventheuniquerole,purpose,and

functionoftheseorganizations,RegisteredGraduateStudentOrganizationsenjoycertainprivileges.

Afewoftheseprivilegesare:

• PossiblefundingeligibilityfromtheGraduateStudentAssociation

• AbilitytoreserveUniversityfacilitiesformeetings,programs,andevents

• SupportfromtheBureauofConferences(BOC)andBostonCollegePoliceDepartment

• Accesstogeneralorganizationadvisingandprogrammaticsupport

• Leadershipandorganizationaleffectivenesstraining

• InclusionintheNewGraduateandProfessionalStudentOrientationResourceFair

FundingforNewRegisteredGraduateStudentOrganizations:

Organizationsthatarespecificallycreatedbyandforgraduateorprofessionalstudentswillhavetheopportunityto

requestfundingfromtheGraduateStudentAssociation.PleasenotethatfundingbytheGSAisNOTguaranteed.We

encourageallGraduateStudentOrganizationstoco-sponsorwiththeGraduateStudentAssociationorother

organizationstoreceiveadditionalfunding.

RegisteredGraduateStudentOrganizationAdvisorRole

AllRegisteredGraduateStudentOrganizationsmusthaveanadvisorwhoisafull-timefacultyorstaffmemberofBoston

College.Theadvisorisintegraltotheeducationalprocessofthestudentleaderandthedevelopmentofstudent

organizations.Advisorsareresponsibleformodelingethicalandappropriatebehaviorformembersofstudent

organizations.Theirroleistoassistwithandfacilitatestudentlearning.Theadvisorofastudentorganizationwillhavea

significantinfluenceupontheorganization.Theadvisorhelpstomoldandshapetheclubbyprovidingcontinuityyear

afteryear,motivatingandstimulatingtheorganization,andinterjectingnewideasandperspectives.Towardthisend,

theadvisorshouldconsultwiththeOfficeofGraduateStudentLiferegularly.Inmanyways,theadvisorservesasan

extensionoftheOfficeofGraduateStudentLife,whileassistingthemembersoftheorganizationtodevelopconfidence,

character,andcompetence.

DevelopingaGoodRelationshipWithYourAdvisor

AllstudentorganizationsarerequiredtohaveafulltimefacultyorstaffadvisoremployedbyBostonCollege.Ifyou

currentlyhaveanadvisor,butwouldliketoswitchadvisors,werecommendthatyoufirstinformyourcurrentadvisorof

yourdesireforanewadvisor;onceanewadvisorhasbeenidentified,pleasenotifytheOfficeofGraduateStudentLife.

Thefaculty/staffmemberofastudentorganizationisoftenconfrontedbythequestionofwhatsortofrolehe/she

shouldplay.Thereisnoclearcutanswertothisquestion.Herearesomebasicconceptsthatmayhelp:

• Provideguidance,whilehonoringtheautonomyoftheorganization

• Meetwithstudentleadersatleasttwiceasemesterandbeup-to-dateontheplansofthestudentorganization

• Assiststudentorganizationsinmeetingtheirmission

• Sethighexpectationsforthemselvesandthestudentswithwhichtheywork

• Advocatefortheorganizationtheyadvise

• CommunicatewiththeOGSLatleasttwiceeachsemesterregardingtheactivityofthestudentorganizations

Thenatureofthefaculty/staffadvisorinteractionwiththegroupwillbedeterminedbytheneedsofthatgroup.For

example,ifthegroupisnewandhasinexperiencedleadership,theadvisormayinstituteamoredirectapproach.This

roleisalsodeterminedbythepersonalityoftheadvisorandtheexpectationsofthegroup.Insomecases,anadvisor

hasaverydominantpersonalityandwhenworkingwithagroup,itmaybedifficultforthemtoplayamorepassiverole.

Ontheotherhand,thegroupmayexpecttheadvisortoplayamoreactiverolefortheorganization.Ineithercase,

extremecarewillhavetobetakentominimizeanypotentialconflictbetweentheadvisorandthestudents.

Beforecommittingtoanadvisor,haveaprospectivefacultyadvisormeetwithyourgrouponseveraloccasions.The

studentscangettoknowthefaulty/staffmemberandhe/shecanmakeobservationsabouttheappropriatestyleof

advisementthatshouldbeused.Afterseveralmeetings,theadvisorandthestudentorganization’sleadershipcanmeet

todiscusstheobservationsoftheadvisorandtheexpectationsofthegroupfortheiradvisor.

TipsforMaintainingaGoodRelationshipwithYourAdvisor:

• Behonestandupfrontwithyouradvisor.

• Keeptheadvisorinformedofmeetingsandactivities.

• Meetwithyouradvisortotalkaboutproposedactivitiesandprograms.Lethim/herknowwhathe/shecanhelp

youwith.

• Respectyouradvisor’stimebycommunicatingwithhim/herinatimelymatter

• Donotexpectyouradvisortobeabletodropeverythingtohelpyouwithalastminuterequest.Donotaskthe

advisortodoworkthatyoushoulddoforyourself.

• Keepinmindthatyouradvisorvolunteeredforthispositionbecausehe/shewantedtosupportyouandyour

• Internalofficial,ornoncommercialuseconstitutestheuseofBostonCollegeindiciainoronmanufactured

goods,includingsignage,publications,andbannersthatarenotsubjecttotheUniversity'sGraphicIdentity

System;awards;uniforms;athleticparaphernalia;andotherdevicesoftheUniversitythatarenotsoldandare

POSTINGPOLICY

Allstudentclub/organizationpostingsontheBostonCollegeCampusmustbeapprovedandstamped.Postingsmust

containallinformationthatisrelevanttotheevent.Thepurposeofthispolicyistomanagethephysicalpostingof

materialoncampusinawaythatensurestheappropriateuseofavailablespace,preventsthedefacingofUniversity

propertyandreducesunnecessaryexpendituresofUniversityresourcesusedtorepairand/orreplaceUniversity

property.PostingsmustbeconsistentwiththeprinciplesandvaluesespousedbyBostonCollege.Inaddition,the

contentofthepostingsmustavoiddemeaningordiscriminatoryportrayalsofindividualsorgroups,cannotbelibelous,

violatecopyrightlaw,orcontainanymaterialthatisinconsistentwiththecommunitystandardsofBostonCollege,

includinganyreferencestoalcohol,drugs,orsexualinnuendos.TheOfficeofGraduateStudentLifereservestherightto

makedecisionsregardingtheapprovalofwhatistobeposted.Violationsorabuseofthispolicymayresultinafine,the

4. Onceyouhavesubmittedyourpacket,theGSASenatewilldeterminewhethertorecommendornotto

recommendyournewgraduatestudentorganizationattheirnextmonthlymeeting.Ifnotrecommendedby

theGSASenateyouwillbenotifiedandgivenanexplanationastowhyyournewgraduatestudentorganization

wasnotrecommended.

5. IfrecommendedbytheGSAforapproval,theDirectorofGraduateStudentLifewillreviewandapproveor

denytheapplication.
