Passing the Peace of Christ
Greeting:
One: Pilgrims, we are invited to journey through this season of Lent
All: towards the One who calls us each by a new name.
One: Disciples, we walk with Jesus wherever he leads us,
All: pulling our fears, our doubts, and our longings behind us.
One: Believers, we seek to trust the God who always surprises us,
All: whose promises take on flesh and blood in the good news called Jesus.
Apostles’ Creed, No. 882
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus
Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he
descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is
seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and
the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Amen.
Opening Prayer:
Eternal God, enter our lives and open us to the gifts residing deep within the Holy
Darkness of our lives. Open us to seek your voice from deep within, for we yearn to
feel you moving in us. In your name, we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession:
God, forgive us for paying more attention to the expected path than the right one.
Forgive us for denying our very aliveness out of a misguided self-sacrificing agenda.
Forgive us for valuing the safe choices instead of the ones that lead to life. Forgive
and restore us, O God. For you desire our fully-alive selves and you are cheering us
on as we discern our best choices. And you are with us, forgiving and restoring us to
wholeheartedness. Thanks be to you, O God! Amen!

Words: Rev. Carolyn Winfrey Gillette
We Grieve 500,000
(Sung to the tune of “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded”)
Permission given to use in our churches
We grieve five hundred thousand, yet we can’t understand
We cannot grasp how many have died throughout this land
We cannot see their faces or hear the stories told
Of all the ways they blessed us, the young ones and the old.
O God, we grieve the struggle of those who died alone
So far from friends and neighbors, from all they’d ever known.
We grieve for precious people who could not say good-bye
We weep for those, now mourning, who sit alone and cry
O God, we grieve for millions who now are unemployed
Who cannot feed their families, whose hope has been destroyed
We grieve that needed workers must worry for their health
While some with lives of privilege stay home and build their wealth
O God, of love and mercy, we cry to you, “How long?”
In troubled times remind us: Your love is ever strong
Now as we grieve the suffering, Lord, show us how to be
A healing, loving presence in each community.

SCRIPTURES
Jeremiah 31:31-34 New International Version (NIV)
31 “The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the people
of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their
ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my
covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD. 33 “This is the covenant I will
make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their
minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer
will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, “Know the LORD,” because they will all
know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the LORD. “For I will forgive their
wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
One: This is the Word of the Lord.
Many: Thanks be to God.
Hebrews 5:5-10 New Living Translation (NLT)
5 That is why Christ did not honor himself by assuming he could become High Priest. No, he
was chosen by God, who said to him, “You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.”
6 And in another passage God said to him, “You are a priest forever in the order of
Melchizedek.” 7 While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud
cry and tears, to the one who could rescue him from death. And God heard his prayers because
of his deep reverence for God. 8 Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from
the things he suffered. 9 In this way, God qualified him as a perfect High Priest, and he became
the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him. 10 And God designated him to be a
High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.
One: This is the Word of the Lord.
Many: Thanks be to God.

John 12:20-33 New International Version (NIV)
20 Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 They
came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would
like to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus. 23 Jesus
replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a
kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it
produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their
life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I
am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me. 27 “Now my soul is
troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason
I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have
glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had
thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him. 30 Jesus said, “This voice was for your
benefit, not mine. 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this
world will be driven out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to
myself.” 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.
One: The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Many: Thanks be to God.

THE BLESSINGS OF SPRING BY DEBORAH ANN BELKA
[Cont’d on next page]
A Lenten Prayer for God to Bring Beauty from Ashes BY DEBBIE MCDANIEL
There are many blessings, that each new Spring brings you can
see it bloom about and hear the song it sings.
With winters bleakness over, and brighter days ahead comes
promises of new life Springtime loves to spread.
As God unfolds the flowers, and their buds begin to show He
gives to us the assurance grace in our hearts will grow.
He sends us the robin’s song, with the promise to provide a
shelter under His mighty wing
where in His love we can abide.
He melts the snowy covers, and sends the refreshing rain sprinkling us with His mercies
to heal winter’s ache and pain.
God’s given to all His Son, to shed upon us a new light and the real blessing of Spring . . .
is keeping Jesus in our sight!
Song of Solomon 2: 11-12 (KJV)
“For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; The flowers appear on the earth; the
time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;”
“To bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of
mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.” Isa 61:3
As we walk through this season of Lent, we’re reminded again that sometimes… life
is hard. Sometimes it hurts. Sometimes it’s dark. And it leaves its mark, like ashes of
grief, in the deepest parts of our souls, where no one but God can really see. Yet even
in times of ashes and struggle, even when we think we’ve been forgotten in our
seasons of waiting, God is still there. And He is bigger.
As believers, we can still hold on to hope. For He never intends for us to stay stuck in
our sin, pain, or deep sorrow. He heals and restores, He calls us onward, He reminds
us that in Him, we have great purpose and hope.
13
[Cont’d from previous page]
There is beauty and greatness behind every mark of darkness. The ashes will fall
away, they don’t stay forever, but His greatness and glory shine forever through
every broken place and flaw we’ve struggled through. Jesus conquered death. He lives
forever. He reigns in glory. And we have victory in Him.
Take courage dear friends who are facing deep battles. He is greater than any enemy
we face in this life. We overcome because He has overcome and our lives are hidden
in Christ. May God cover you with peace, may He bring healing in the face of hard
news, may He bring deep, abiding joy that makes no sense to the world, may He bring
comfort and care as He wraps you in His arms. The God of miracles fights for you
today, and He is Mighty. There's still beauty ahead...straight out of ashes. Christ
redeems. Grace.
Dear God,
In this season of Lent we’re reminded of our own
difficulties and struggles. Sometimes the way has
seemed too dark. Sometimes we feel like our lives
have been marked by such grief and pain, we
don’t see how our circumstances can ever change.
But in the midst of our weakness, we ask that you
would be strong on our behalf. Lord, rise up
within us, let your Spirit shine out of every
broken place we’ve walked through. Allow your
power to be manifest through our own weakness,
so that others will recognize it is You who is at
work on our behalf. We ask that you would trade
the ashes of our lives for the beauty of your
Presence. Trade our mourning and grief for the
oil of joy and gladness from your Spirit. Trade
our despair for hope and praise. We choose to give you thanks today and
believe that this season of darkness will fade away. Thank you that you are
with us in whatever we face, and that you are greater than this trial. We
know and recognize that you are Sovereign, we thank you for the victory
that is ours because of Christ Jesus, and we are confident that you have good
still in store for our future. We thank you that you are at work right now,
trading our ashes for greater beauty. We praise you, for you make all things
new.
In Jesus’ Name,
“Of one thing I am perfectly sure:
God’s story never ends with ashes.”
Elisabeth Elliot

A SBURY NEWS
GIVING FOR LENT: Giving alms (money or goods offered freely to the poor) is one of the pillars
of Lent and an ancient practice in the Church. Jesus proclaimed in the Gospel of Matthew
25:31-46 that giving to the hungry, thirsty, naked, sick, imprisoned is giving to him and is the
key to entering his kingdom. (Excerpt taken from Kristen Wall-Love’s devotional). There are
Lenten envelopes in the pews and chairs for you to give over and above your regular giving
during the season of Lent to help provide for our ministries. God loves a cheerful giver.
(2 Corinthians 9:7)
HYDE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION AVAILABLE ON-LINE: The Hyde Scholarship is presented
each year to one or sometimes two graduating seniors who meet specific criteria. Applicants
must be a member of Asbury UMC and a graduate of a Wicomico County public high school
with good academic standing, and have been accepted to a 2 or 4-year college. They must also
meet Sunday School attendance requirements, and be active in other church-related activities.
The application is available on the church website and is due by Tuesday, April 1, 2021. The
scholarship(s) will be presented at a later date.
OPPORTUNITY SHOP SPRING HOURS: Doing some spring cleaning? The Opp Shop would love to
have your stuff! The shop is now accepting all seasonal decor, spring clothing in all sizes and
houseware items. Donations should be in gently used, good condition, and tax receipts are
available. Donations can be dropped off the following times:
Monday - 8:30 - 11:30 am, Tuesday - 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, Wednesday - 8:30 - 10:30 am and
Thursday - 10:00 am - 1:00 pm. Shopping hours: Tuesday and Thursday - 10:00 am - 1:00 pm.
Thank you for supporting this important ministry!
SALISBURY URBAN MINISTRY NEEDS: Lazarus Food Pantry: Ramen Noodles, Side Dishes
(potatoes, rice, noodles), cereal bars. Kids Café: Flash Cards (Math), Workbooks Grade 1-5, Snacks.
Men’s Welcome Center: Men’s Boxers (sizes large to XX-Large). SUM is seeking an Assistant
Coordinator for our Kid’s Café program. If interested, please see full job description placed at the
welcome centers.
ASP FUNDRAISER: We've all missed those sweet, delicious pancakes, and ASP has missed
having a regular opportunity to fundraise. It takes a lot of moving parts to get our teams to
Appalachia, and many hands make light work! Our ASP leadership has come up with an easy
way for you to add your hand to the mix. This beautiful rainbow of envelopes has dollar
amounts written on them stretching from $1-$100. One mission trip typically requires about
$18,000. If all 100 envelopes are filled with the amounts pledged, that would come out to
$5,050, which would go a long way towards making homes warmer, safer and drier!
You can pick an envelope on Sunday mornings during worship, or if you are worshipping from
home, you can send in your donation to the church office and the ASP team will match it up
with an envelope for you! Please be sure to mark donations as "ASP Envelope Fundraiser".
Thank you for supporting this important ministry!

Our Father
who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy

come. Thy will be
done on earth as it is
