    Apostles’ Creed, No. 882

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus

Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the

Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he

descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is

seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and

the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of

saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

    Amen.

    Opening Prayer:

Compassionate God, all creation delights in your presence. May the authority of your

    SCRIPTURES

Deuteronomy 18:15-20 New International Version (NIV)

15 The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow

Israelites. You must listen to him. 16 For this is what you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb

on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God nor

see this great fire anymore, or we will die.”

17 The LORD said to me: “What they say is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you

from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them

everything I command him. 19 I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my

words that the prophet speaks in my name. 20 But a prophet who presumes to speak in my

name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to

    be put to death.”

One: This is the Word of the Lord.

    Many: Thanks be to God.

1 Corinthians 8:1-13 Gods Word Translation (GW)

8 Now, concerning food offered to false gods: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge

makes people arrogant, but love builds them up. 2 Those who think they know something still

have a lot to learn. 3 But if they love God, they are known by God. 4 Now about eating food that

was offered to false gods: We know that the false gods in this world don’t really exist and that

no god exists except the one God. 5 People may say that there are gods in heaven and on

earth—many gods and many lords, as they would call them. 6 But for us,

“There is only one God, the Father.

Everything came from him, and we live for him.

There is only one Lord, Jesus Christ.

Everything came into being through him, and we live because of him.”

7 But not everyone knows this. Some people are so used to worshiping false gods that they

believe they are eating food offered to a false god. So they feel guilty because their conscience is

    weak.

8 Food will not affect our relationship with God. We are no worse off if we eat ⌞that food⌟ and

no better off if we don’t. 9 But be careful that by using your freedom you don’t somehow make a

believer who is weak in faith fall into sin. 10 For example, suppose someone with a weak

conscience sees you, who have this knowledge, eating in the temple of a false god. Won’t you be

encouraging that person to eat food offered to a false god? 11 In that case, your knowledge is

ruining a believer whose faith is weak, a believer for whom Christ died. 12 When you sin against

other believers in this way and harm their weak consciences, you are sinning against

Christ.13 Therefore, if eating food ⌞offered to false gods⌟ causes other believers to lose their

faith, I will never eat that kind of food so that I won’t make other believers lose their faith.

One: This is the Word of the Lord.

    Many: Thanks be to God.

    Mark 1:21-28 Gods Word (GW)

21 Then they went to Capernaum. On the next day of rest—a holy day, Jesus went into the

synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teachings. Unlike their experts

in Moses’ Teachings, he taught them with authority.

23 At that time there was a man in the synagogue who was controlled by an evil spirit. He

shouted, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus from Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I

know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

25 Jesus ordered the spirit, “Keep quiet, and come out of him!” 26 The evil spirit threw the man

into convulsions and came out of him with a loud shriek.

27 Everyone was stunned. They said to each other, “What is this? This is a new teaching that

has authority behind it! He gives orders to evil spirits, and they obey him.”

28 The news about him spread quickly throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

One: This is the Gospel of the Lord, Jesus Christ.

    Many: Thanks be to God.

A SBURY NEWS CHURCH TOWN HALL MEETING

Tuesday, February 2, 2021 in the Sanctuary at Noon

Thursday, February 25, 2021 in the Fellowship Hall at 7:00pm

Tuesday, March 2, 2021 in the Sanctuary at 7:00pm

*The meetings in the Fellowship Hall will be live-streamed on Facebook Live.

Pastor Tom will share with you the current proposals before General Conference 2021 and will

answer your questions about the United Methodist Church and about Asbury. We hope you can

    join us.

    ELECTRONIC FUNDS TRANSFER

Please consider your 2021 giving by electronic funds transfer (EFT). It is very easy to sign up –

just complete the back of your Generosity Pledge Card and we will do all the processing. Giving

by EFT lessens the worry if you have cash/checks with you when you come to worship. This also

maintains consistent giving and avoids the need to “catch up” on your giving when you are

away. We have over 55 members/friends who currently enjoy giving electronically.

COMMUNITY SHELTER EMERGENCY PROJECT (CESP) UPDATE

HOORAY……….Once again the Asbury family has shown its ability to love and share with our

community. ALL 15 nights of dinners assigned to Asbury have been filled. On behalf of the

men we THANK YOU SO MUCH.

There are still other opportunities to help with CESP by volunteering to prepare grab n’ go

breakfasts, bagged lunches, or volunteer for intake or overnight shifts. Google “Housing First

Salisbury Maryland” and click on the CESP information.

    SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY

Due to the coronavirus, this year we will not be distributing grocery bags to fill. Instead,

Salisbury Urban Ministries is asking you to fill their soup pot with a monetary donation located

in the Narthex and Fellowship Hall until February 7. Please help us help those in need. If you

have any questions, please contact the church office or email [email protected].

    HYDE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION AVAILABLE SOON!

The Hyde Scholarship is presented each year to one or sometimes two graduating seniors who

meet specific criteria. Applicants must be a member of Asbury UMC and a graduate of a

Wicomico County public high school with good academic standing, and have been accepted to a

2 or 4-year college. They must also meet Sunday School attendance requirements, and be active

in other church-related activities. The application will be on-line and is due by Sunday, March

    21. The scholarship(s) will be presented at a later date.

A SBURY NEWS shopping bags! Thank you for supporting this important ministry!

    2021 IS UPON US!

It is time to start thinking about ‘my one word’ for the new year! There is a helpful book to go along

with this concept—if you would like a copy, please see Kristen. Here is the nutshell: Instead of a list

of new year’s resolutions, choosing just one word helps us to truly focus on discerning God’s path for

us as we grow spiritually. Pray about what word God is calling you to focus on in the upcoming year.

The website myoneword.org has lots of words if you need some ideas.

Speaking of 2021, a great way to grow in our faith is to have not only a devotion, but an

accountability group. There will be a group beginning in mid-January focusing on the gospel of

Luke. This group will consist of scripture copying, scripture mapping, and a weekly zoom discussion

Monday evenings at 7pm. It will also be possible to do the devotion on your own if you prefer.

Email [email protected] if you are interested.

Check out Asbury’s CoronaBible project in the library. This was a community effort in the spring

and summer to hand copy scripture when we were forced to be physically apart, but remained

spiritually united in our faith and worship through

the word. We have a lot of the gospels and if you would like to contribute to this living document,

    please let me Kristen know.

    SALISBURY URBAN MINISTRY NEEDS

Lazarus Food Pantry: Ramen Noodles, Side Dishes (potatoes, rice, noodles), cereal bars. Kids Café:

Flash Cards (Math), Workbooks Grade 1-5, Snacks. Men’s Welcome Center: Men’s Boxers (sizes

    large to XX-Large).

Salisbury Urban Ministries is looking for donations of clean empty egg cartons.

A wonderful donor is bringing fresh eggs for the Lazarus Food Pantry and the cartons are

needed to pass the eggs out to the clients. Donations can be dropped off at Salisbury Urban

Ministry located at 326 Barclay Street, Salisbury, MD or call (410) 749-1563.

GET INVOLVED WITH YOUR COMMUNITY & CHURCH

Interested in a ministry, but not sure if it’s for you? Or maybe unsure just what you’re

interested in? Talk to Kristen Wall-Love, our Director of Spiritual Formation & Membership.

We have lots of ministries serving lots of different interests. Let Kristen find one for you, or go

to a meeting and experience it for yourself. Get involved! You’ll be glad you did! Call the church
