Innovation?

Myth Busting

• MYTH: Innovation is only associated with research activity

• MYTH: Innovation only involves new technologies, medical devices or drugs

• MYTH: You need to be working with companies to engage in innovation

Ford Assembly Line

• Change in the manufacturing process was game-changer; not just the technology employed

Innovation

Benefits?

• Patient benefits - improved outcomes, better patient experience, improved compliance, improved safety

• Organisational benefits - improved quality, greater efficiency, increased productivity, cost improvements

• Financial benefits - CQUINs, PbR, research income, new services, commercial activity

Why support innovation?

• New ideas occur independently of any system of management

• BUT cannot identify, appraise, support development, support adoption or share those good ideas without a support framework

• We deliver both hands-on support and management/governance capability

Innovation Pathway

Innovation Pathway

Recognise Issue

• Identify the problem; prioritise according to strategic objectives

• Understand causes & consequences• Obtain baseline metrics e.g. targets missed• Can problem be solved by adopting best

practice guidelines?

Find Solution

• Develop own solution • Identify existing solution; external

environment• Appraise solution - potential benefits,

resource requirements, feasibility• Potential broader value? e.g. commercial

opportunities

External Innovations

• Evidence-based e.g. QIPP, NICE• Requiring evaluation e.g HTAP, companies• Requiring testing/validation e.g NHS Trusts,

companies • Early-stage ideas e.g Catalogue of Potential

Innovations, CIMIT CoLab

Develop & Test

• Obtain Proof of Concept• Test idea (pilot study) - measure impact• Secure resources and internal support• Develop commercialisation strategy if

warranted

Adoption

• Review impact from pilot study• Develop adoption plan/business case -

redesign as required on basis of pilot study• Implement idea locally - measure impact &

report on outcomes• Implement commercialisation strategy if

warranted

Diffusion

• Disseminate the outcomes and benefits • Provide implementation guidance• Various routes for sharing e.g QIPP case study,

media, AHSN, commercial partnerships• Consider local/national/global relevance
