He was one of the first fifteen year olds to serve as an ambulance driver with the Red Cross during the First World War.

He was the first to see the nationwide potential of a small family business operating out of California.

He was the first man to apply the principles of mass production to the service industry.

During the late 1950s, Kroc tried his hand at selling paper cups.

He worked as a pianist for a short period of time.

He traveled around the country and sold milkshake machines to various different cafes and restaurants.

During this time he ran across a small hamburger restaurant in San Bernardino, California named McDonald's.

In 1954, a fifty-two-year-old milk-shake machine salesman saw a hamburger stand in San Bernardino, California.

Ray Kroc opened his first McDonalds in 1955 in Des Plaines.

In 1956, Kroc set up the Franchise Realty Corporation.

He revolutionized the American restaurant industry by imposing discipline on the production of hamburgers, french fries, and milk shakes.

Kroc envisioned a restaurant that ran like a factory.

By 1960 there were over 200 McDonald's around the United States.

In 1961, he bought them out completely in $ 2.7 million.

He established national advertising campaigns to support his restaurants and took the brand international in 1971 to Japan and Germany.

In 1972, when more than 2,200 McDonald’s outlets racked up $1 billion in sales, Kroc received the Horatio Alger award from Norman Vincent Peale.

By 1987, McDonald’s had sold over 65 billion hamburgers and it had just opened its ten thousandth store.

Today, one-third of new McDonald’s franchises are opened in foreign markets.

Died on January 14, 1984 at the age of 81.
