Corporate Social ResponsibilityTheir Business or Our Business?Gbenga Oluwabamise 2013

To most people, CSR simply means giving back

• Giving to indigent individuals and communities

• Planting trees at roundabouts

• Patching potholes all over the place

What does CSR really mean?

It’s a form of corporate self-regulation integrated into a business model.

CSR policy functions as a built-in, self-regulating instrument through which a business monitors and ensures its active compliance with the spirit of the law, ethical standards, and international norms.

CSRThere are three basic

forces that drive

Risk managementCompliance to mitigate operational risk and impact

Value CreationEnsuring the customers get the right value for their money.

Corporate philanthropy Giving back to the society

Corporate Social Responsibility is way beyond

giving handouts while corporate organisations shirk their responsibilities to customers, operating environments and society at large.

It is about companies doing the right things by...

-ensuring the right standards are maintained

-showing love and respect to their Operating environment by complying with global safety standards.

-giving back to the society with a genuine motive

So what have all these got to do with us?

• As a corporate organisation, we need to understand and stay committed to our responsibility towards our consuming publics.

• As consumers and members of the ecosystem; we need to actively keep

organisations on their toes by demanding our rights and ensuring

they comply with global standards in every way.

Moral of the story

“Any business that makes nothing but money is a poor kind of business”

The overriding motivation of business organisations should be to make a difference

Final curtain call

“If you can, help others; if you cannot do that, at least do not harm them.”
