Balancing life with Academics

Balance the endless and often conflicting time demands imposed by teaching, , service, and personal life. It takes most faculty members long years of trial and error to learn how to do all that, and some never quite figure it out.

Most of us are interested in improving something about ourselves: our productivity, our sanity, our organization, our happiness, our effectiveness, our impact on the environment, our minds, our dreams.

Every one is interested in improving the world but few practice it ?

Teachers are no exception

Learn something “new” each day to keep growing intellectually. Stagnation of thoughts will eventually end up giving you a cesspool of nothingness. Be curious. Become growth oriented. Always look for information that enhances your personal performance or position in life. “Lazy” is not part of this process!

Learn something new every day

Our Main Job Is Teaching[Lecture preparation]

On average, it should take two hours to prepare a new 1-hour lecture on material you know, three at most; half-an-hour to revise a 1-hour lecture; and roughly 30 hours to prepare a 1-hour interactive web lecture. If it takes you much more than that, you’re probably over preparing (a common mistake made by new faculty members).

Avoiding Overloaded Syllabus

Have several professors independently analyse the content of a course and decide which topics they would not include. Those topics may generally be considered optional. Over doing things causes confusion

Many Teachers loose interest in reading other than what they are supposed to Teach, However Choose a book that requires effort and concentration and read a little of it every day, so that you read it from cover to cover in 100 days.

Read a book on something other than you know

Use instructional technology only for tasks that are essential to the course and cannot be done as well—if at all—without it, and when the added cost of using it is reasonable. If you decide to use it and you’re not an expert, get help.

Use Instructional technology

Design tests so that 15–20% of the material is covered only in the lectures, 15–20% only in the readings, and the remaining 60–70% in both. To make sure that a test is not too long, work through it yourself and multiply your solution

Design the Tests with Caution and Practicability

A sense of humour can help you become a successful teacher. Your sense of humor can relieve tense classroom situations before they become disruptions. A sense of humor will also make class more enjoyable for your students and possibly make students look forward to attending and paying attention

Create A Sense of Humour

Page 16: BE A SUCCESSFUL TEACHER

Dr.T.V.Rao MD 16

Most importantly, a sense of humor will allow you to see the joy in life and make you a happier person as you progress through this sometimes stressful career.

Humour makes you Joyful

A consistent teacher is the same person from day to day. A fair teacher treats students equally in the same situation. For example, students complain of unfairness when teachers treat one gender or group of students differently.

Be a Consistent Teacher

We should be friendly but not become friends. Friendship implies give and take. This can put you in a tough situation with all the students in the class. Teaching is not a popularity contest and you are not just one of the guys or girls. Always remember that.

Becoming friends with students while they are in class.

Good teachers try and try and try, and let students know they try. Just as we respect students who really try, even if they do not succeed in everything they do, so they will respect us, even if we are not as good as we want to be.

Good Teachers Really Want to Be Good Teachers

Negative talk produces negative thoughts; negative thoughts produce negative results”, Feed your mind with the thoughts, words, and images that are most consistent with who you want to be, what you want to have, and what you want to achieve.

Think positive avoid negative ideas Thinking positive is the Best Option

We teachers have something called academic freedom. Too many of us interpret that to mean the freedom from firing. I love taking risks. It keeps some excitement in what is, after all, a pretty placid profession.

Never Forget We are Gifted People

Page 22: BE A SUCCESSFUL TEACHER

Dr.T.V.Rao MD 22

I like to try things that can fail. If there is no chance of failure, then success is meaningless.

Do not bother

Become aware of the differences between how you treat others, and how you treat yourself. Are you dismisive of yourself? Do you treat yourself with the same respect that you treat others?

Teach Others How to Treat You

Just about all of the good teachers I have known are eternally busy.

Good Teachers Never Have Enough Time

Page 25: BE A SUCCESSFUL TEACHER

Dr.T.V.Rao MD 25

For good teachers the day is never done. While it does not follow that any teacher who keeps busy is a good teacher, the good teachers I know rarely have time to relax

It sounds simple and old, but it is absolutely true. Often we don't realise how sullen we are. Consciously making an effort to smile more - even when you're alone (especially when you're alone) will increase your general state of mind automatically.

Smile More – Complain less

We all come across people who upset us or make us angry. We all come across people who seem to be just mean and nasty. Here's a perspective-adjuster that can really help in dealing with such people. The people around you are not your choice try to ignore them .

Some people are just bad learn to deal with them

Read about a subject you wouldn’t normally. This is a great way to develop a better understanding of the world. It will also make you a more interesting person in the process.

Read and do some think new

There will be days when you hear things from students about other teachers that you just think are terrible. However, you should be noncommittal to the students and take your concerns to the teacher themselves or to administration.

Ignore the Comments on other Teachers

I have noticed that good teachers, when they get really good evaluations, don't quite believe them. They focus instead on the one or two erratic evaluations that say something bad about them. They good teachers tend to trust only the negative evaluations

Good Teachers Do Not Trust Student Evaluations
