Greece - 4 -

The wealth and diversity of the Greek seas, the endlesskilometers of the Greek coast and the thousands of Greekislands, the protected sea areas covering thousands ofsquare kilometers, the mild climate, the high percentage ofsunshine and its interesting and varying landscape makeGreece the ideal destination for the development of seatourism activities.

This advantage is strengthened both by thousands of yearsof marine tradition and by conditions favorable for seatravelling: the Greek seas are considered safe, distancesbetween coasts are small, while conditions related to windstrength, ambient and sea temperatures are equally

favorable.

Traces of a centuries-old and important history is etched in every corner ofGreek land: findings from the Prehistoric and Archaic Periods, unique worksfrom Classical, Hellenistic, Medieval and Byzantine monuments, creationsfrom folk art cultures, traces from the passing eons of other civilizations anddifferent religions, that coexist with current creations, constructions andmodern works of art.Greece is a true paradise for cultural tourism, a large journey into history andart. Educational excursions, theatrical productions, festivals, pilgrimages, visits to archaeological sites, monuments and museums, excursions to studythe natural environment, folk art and culture – these are just a few of themany things that Greece has to offer in the cultural tourism sector.

Whoever really wants to understand Greece, its history and its people, hewill find an unrivalled cultural experience through traveling into the area andchronological period of Greek culture.

Sip a glass of ouzo or wine with grilled octopus or anyother Greek dish while sitting under the shade of a treein a small tavern by the sea on an island in the Aegean. When you return home, try to repeat this experience bypreparing the same meal and serving the same drink.Wherever you try to repeat this, you will soon realizethat it does not taste the same. It’s not that something iswrong with your palate or your culinary skills, it’s thatthe Greek ritual when eating a meal –mainly acombination of what you are eating and where you areeating it- cannot be repeated, extracted or copied. It issimply something you can only find, taste and enjoy inGreece.

In about the middle of the 20th century, Mykonos “was discovered” by the localsand foreigners resulting in becoming one of the most touristic sites in the world. The inhabitants easily adapted to the new conditions, a fact which produced thesuccessful tourist model of Mykonos. Led by intuition and hard work, the peopleof Mykonos ensured their island glory and wealth. Today the island of Mykonos issupplementing their infrastructure, improving the services offered and firmlyclaiming an eminent position in international tourism.

Greece, Mykonos - 5 -

According to archaeological finds on the island but alsoin historical sources, the ancient city of Mykonos wasfounded in the 11th century by Iones from Athens whowith their leader Ippokli, son of Nilea, settled in theplace of present day Chora. Mykonos has close ties toDelos and was a member of the Delian alliance. Duringthe height of Delos, Mykonos experienced prosperitydue to the economic boom of the neighboring islandbut with the disaster of Delos it fell into obscurity. After a Byzantine period, from 1204 with the fall of theCity to the Franks, the island is taken over by theVenetians. Since then many have passed through theisland: Catalans, pirates occasionally, Turks of courseand for a short period during the period of GreatAikaterinis and Orlof, the Russians as well until theliberation

The cosmopolitan island of Corfu is probably the most well known island of theIonian complex and one of the most popular in the whole Mediterranean. It isa pole of attraction for hundreds of thousands visitors every year as well assource of inspiration for all kinds of art, carrying a huge cultural heritage anddisposing special splendor which combined with its natural beauty, marvelousclimate, beaches and interesting sights, makes the island one of the topdestinations for Greek and foreign travelers. Its area covers a surface of 591km2 and its coasts stretch 217 km.

Corfu (Kerkira) was named after a woman. According to mythology, Poseidonfell in love with the daughter of Aesopos, Korkira, and brought her to thisisland naming it after her. The offspring of this love was a little boy, namedFaiakas. He was to establish later the Kingdom of Faiakes, which according toHomer was the last stop of Ulysses before he returned to Ithaca. The international name of Corfu was given to the island due to the two citadels(perched on two different tops) which can be found in the town of Corfu.Another ancient name that we can meet is Drepanon (scythe), which wasattributed to the island because of its shape.

Corfu defines the Hellenic sea borders with Italy and Albania. This strategicposition is responsible for the many conquests the island has undergone, influencing its culture, mores and customs. The Venetians, the French and theEnglish passed on to the island many strong cultural elements resulting in theintegration of the western culture to the Greek identity. Corfu joined Greece in1864. The island has made a significant contribution to education, literature, arts and politics.

The first governor of modern Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias, the authors AndreasMoustoksidis and Iakovos Polilas, Nikolaos Mantzaros, who wrote the music forthe Greek National Anthem, and the Theotokis family, which gave birth to manysignificant politicians and authors, come from Corfu. In 1824 the first Greekuniversity known as Ionian Academy, was founded on the island. In 1840 thefirst philharmonic orchestra of Greece was established. It is not an accidental fact that today Corfu numbers 18 philharmonicorchestras.

It is one of the most famous islands of the Cyclades as well as one of the most renownedGreek islands around the globe. Santorini presents a unique geological phenomenon, astoday it is what has been left from the initial one (Stroggyli), which was submerged into thesea after the eruption of its volcano during the 16th century B.C. This was one of the mostviolent eruptions in the history of the Earth: the three quarters of the island weresubmerged, forming the Caldera (crater), while one of the most serious consequencescaused by the eruption was the destruction of the Minoan palaces in Crete. The islandextends over a surface of 73 km2, its coastline is 69.5 km long and it has 13,670inhabitants.

A great prehistoric culture was developed in Santorini, mainly during the Middle-Cycladic period, but it wasdestroyed by the eruption. Later the island was inhabitedagain, became prosperous during the Hellenistic andRoman periods, while it was under Venetian occupationfor many centuries. The tourist development of the lastdecades was frenetic, but the island still remainsattractive, full of secrets and unknown beauties andcontinues to have one of the most famous sunsets of theplanet. It is also famous for its local production of wine asthe vines have been cultivated since the ancient times. The varieties Asirtiko, Athiri, Aidani, Mandilaria andMavrotragano are cultivated here, while the wine knownas “Vintsato” is an exceptional one, produced by a

mixture of Asirtiko and Aidani.

The second largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia is “Almost a Continent” as their ads suggest. Thevariety of landscapes and lifestyles makes that more than a clever slogan. The sharp contrasts between theglitzy high-roller beach resorts of the Costa Smeralda and the wild mountain landscapes and sheep farms ofthe rugged interior are only part of the island’s infinite variety. Porto Cervo, built to simulate a fishing village, isthe center for high-end travelers and those who like to be where the “beautiful” people go, its shops filled withdesigner wear and its harbor with sleek yachts. Smaller Baia Sardinia is less flashy, with small shops and cafeson the waterfront, good beaches and a coastal walk to small beaches secluded among huge weather-wornboulders. It is worth renting a car to explore the island’s interior, where shepherds guard flocks in scrub-covered fields below high jagged mountain peaks.

Hikers and climbers can hire local guides or choose one of the resorts that offer guided excursions. Follow thesteep road to Orgosolo to admire its more than 300 original wall murals. In the south, Cagliari, the capital, is anattractive city with a new opera house and notable churches including the Sanctuary and Basilica of Bonariaand the 6th-century ruins of San Saturnio, as well as a Roman Amphitheater still used for summer opera. Innearby Pula, excavated ruins reveal the story Nora, a Phoenician city captured by Carthage and finally by theRomans.
