The Best View of Dubrovnik is from the Sea

Dubrovnik is probably the best-known Croatian destination. Famous for its medieval core and magnificent town walls, it has been called “the pearl of the Mediterranean”.

As we are in love with sailing, we feel that the most

beautiful view of Dubrovnik is the one from the sea. And

the best way to explore the Dubrovnik area is aboard a

yacht. That is why we have prepared this short guide.

The author is an experienced skipper who knows every

nook and cranny, cove and islet in this area.

Here you will find articles about the Elaphiti Islands,

Lastovo and Mljet, and about the recommended

marinas and ports (Cavtat, Dubrovnik, and Korčula).

This guide will lead you to the best restaurants (tested

on numerous occasions) and the best sailing routes.

increased even further, thanks to the incredibly

successful TV show Game of Thrones, filmed in

Dubrovnik. We invite you to walk the Walls of Dubrovnik

Where to Sail From Dubrovnik Base?

If you wish to make the most of your sailing trip to the South Adriatic, here is a suggestion for your sailing route. This route gives you a chance to see most of the interesting towns, islands and islets in the vicinity. Šipan, Mljet, Korčula and Lastovo are just some of the destinations you can visit.

Dubrovnik is one of the most popular and one of the most

visited tourist destinations on the Adriatic due to its numer-

ous historical sites, the special atmosphere felt within the

city walls, and a rich tourist offer in the broader region. In

addition, there is a beautiful marina near Dubrovnik which

could be considered a historical site as well. The marina is

situated in Komolac, at the spot where many nobles from

Dubrovnik used to build their leisure houses back in the

17th-19th centuries. Nowadays, ACI marina Komolac is

home to numerous charter companies, which means that

there is a lot of potential routes for sailing around the area.

The following route is just a suggestion for experiencing one

of the most interesting sites of the South Adriatic region.

The distances stated in the text refer to the approximate

ideal line, while the real sailed distance depends on the

type of the vessel, sailing skills and style, as well as the

weather conditions.

Let us start with setting off from ACI marina Komolac and

steering our yacht down the bay of Rijeka Dubrovačka. After

passing under the highway bridge and reaching the open

sea, take the northwest course and pass the northeastern

and eastern shores of Daksa islet and Koločep island. After

passing the strait between Koločep and Lopud islands, go

NE towards the island of Šipan and continue alongside its

southwestern coastline to the island of Jakljan.

Your destination for the first day of sailing can be Šipanska

Luka (the port of Šipan) which you will notice right after

passing the strait between Jakljan and Šipan and heading

southeast into the bay. Šipanska Luka provides a good

shelter from all winds and was recognized by the medieval

Dubrovnik nobility for its natural beauty, peace and pictur-

esque scenery. The length of this route is approximately

15 NM, so Šipanska Luka is in the range even if you set

off from Komolac on Saturday afternoon.

If everything is fine with the weather and the mood aboard,

it would be a good idea to get up earlier and take some 35

NM route to the island of Korčula. Favorable west-northwest

winds in the Mljet channel can contribute to an exciting

sailing experience, while an archipelago of small islands

just in front of Korčula hides some interesting swimming

spots. Moorings and fresh water, along with 220 V elec-

tric plugs, are provided by ACI marina Korčula in the very

center of the town or at Marina Lumbarda at the village of

Lumbarda, which is just a few bus stops or a 10-minutes

taxi drive away from Korčula town. You should reserve the

evening for a scenic walk within the medieval city walls

and a dinner at one of the unique restaurants of Korčula.

The third day takes you another 25 NM west-southwest

Page 6: Sailing guide for dubrovnik area

Your favorite Yacht Charterwww.sailingeurope.com 6

towards the island of Lastovo. One could spend the entire

week sailing around the island and its archipelago. A safe

anchorage is provided at Skrivena Luka (“hidden haven”).

You will have to pay for the anchorage as the entire area

around the island Lastovo is a natural park. The islands offer

numerous coves and beaches appropriate for swimming

and snorkeling in crystal clear turquoise waters. One of

the most spectacular views on the South Adriatic can be

seen from the lighthouse Struga at the southern part of

Skrivena Luka bay. If contacted, the lighthouse keeper’s

family can provide you with an unforgettable meal while

the lighthouse keeper will take you on a fishing trip if you

deserve it.

Another 27 NM northeast will take you to Polače on the

island of Mljet. A nice break waits for you in the village

Pomena on the northwestern point of the island. Aside

from nice anchorages and the famous salt lakes, there

is a national park just a few minutes’ walk from Pomena

waterfront. Diving, hiking and mountain bike trips to Mljet

National Park are available from Polače, the biggest and

the most protected port of island Mljet.

The fifth day of the trip is reserved for sailing alongside the

island of Mljet, all the way to its southernmost point. Our

destination is Saplunara bay, west from the southernmost

end of the island. Saplunara, with its sandy beach, is one of

the most beautiful bays on Mljet. The bay is well protected

from all winds while its sandy bottom guarantees a safe

anchorage. The bay is surrounded by a thick pine forest,

which contriubutes to the feeling of tranquility.

Day 6 is meant for crossing the channel between the island

of Mljet and Pelješac peninsula, and spending the night

in Kobaš. This small village gained its popularity among

yachtsmen and other adventurists for its exquisite offer

of genuine food and wines. Hidden bays and coves in

Ston bay offer a unique essence of an untouched natural

paradise with turquoise crystal clear waters.

Unfortunately, the last day of the South Adriatic adventure

always comes faster than expected. It is a good idea to

head towards the Elaphiti archipelago and take a last swim

break on this trip. Šunj beach is a perfect swimspot on

the southeastern side of Lopud island. The last thing you

have to do on this trip is to fill your tank with fuel at the

gas station at the Western side of Gruž port or at the one

at the marina. Make sure that you ask for working hours

of both gas stations and keep in mind that both of them

are very busy in the high season.

South Adriatic Isolated Oasis Is a Paradise for Yachtsmen – Island of Lastovo

The Island of Lastovo belongs to a group of remote and relatively isolated South Adriatic islands that is also referred to as the Lastovo archipelago. Lastovo is located some 7 NM south of the island of Korčula and 16 NM west of the northern cape of the island of Mljet.

Lastovo’s west and northwest coasts are among the most

indented island coasts on the Adriatic, hiding numerous

coves and bays suitable for anchoring, swimming and

snorkeling. However, extra care is needed wherever you

drop the anchor of your charter yacht because this is an

island where winds and surf are stronger than those closer

to the mainland.

The island is actually a part of an archipelago consisting

of 45 islets and rocks. The archipelago was declared a

nature park, which means that an additional fee has to

be paid for anchoring. A great challenge to yachtsmen

is to sail around the entire archipelago and to visit every

one of 45 islands and its bays, fields and churches. Many

yachtsmen cannot resist the challenge, which is why they

come back to this place again and again.

The island’s interior hides the town Lastovo, an ancient

settlement with genuine architecture built in stone. The

special characteristic of the town is the diversity of its

chimneys. No one knows the reason for this, but its citizens

have been competing with each other in building diverse

and imaginative chimneys for generations. It is said that

there are no two chimneys of a kind in Lastovo.

This island will also enchant those yachtsmen who like

to hike and explore the interior of islands. The diversity of

herbs and plants adds value for the visitors, and the entire

island is connected by hiking paths and tracks. It is not

unusual for a yachtsman to leave their boat and the rest

of the crew in order to hike around the island and meet

their companions in another bay at the opposite side of

the island.

While hikers are enjoying the scents and sounds of the

intact nature in the interior of the island, the other part of

the crew can steer the yacht towards Zaklopatica bay on

the north of the island, also known as the bay of good

restaurants. The restaurants Triton and Augusta Insula

confirm that title with their specialties made of fresh sea-

food, especially lobsters. Lastovo is situated 55 NM from

both Split and Dubrovnik, two yacht charter centers in the

Central and South Dalmatia. Charter a yacht in one of those

towns and discover the magic of the Lastovo archipelago!

The Place Where Odysseus Took a Seven-Year Break – Mljet Island

According to a myth and Homer’s masterpiece Odyssey, Odysseus wrecked his ship in the waters of Scylla and Charybdis and found the rescue on the island Ogygia. The latest research suggests that Scylla and Charybdis were ancient names for Veliki and Mali Vratnik southeast of the Croatian island of Mljet, the mythological Ogygia.

Odysseus was rescued by Calypso, the ruler of the island

and the nymph of beauty, nature, peace and silence. After

the rescue, Odysseus enjoyed her company for seven

years, until gods decided that it was time to go home…

I would certainly not advise you to wreck your yacht in

order to visit the island of Mljet in Croatia. Spending sev-

en years there, on the other hand, could be considered.

Homer’s description could also be used as a material for

guidebooks about this island blessed with beautiful nature.

The island of Mljet, located between Korčula island to the

north and Dubrovnik to the south, is nowadays famous

for its forests, natural ports, fresh-water springs, coves,

beaches, lakes and caves, as well as historic sites dating

from ancient times.

The north part of the island was declared a national park in

1960. The shortest way to reach the park would be from

Pomena on the north of the island, where your charter

yacht could be moored in the municipal port or in front of

numerous restaurants along the neighboring bays.

Since the northern part of the island is indented and sur-

rounded by islets, many protected anchorages can be

found in this part of the island, around Polače and Soline

in particular. If you decide to explore the interior of the

island, you can moor at Sobra, Prožura or Okuklje on the

northern coast of the central part of the island, where the

coastline creates natural ports. The southern part of the

island can be explored from the bays around Saplunara.

Thanks to its position in the south Adriatic, the gastronomy

of Mljet is full of Mediterranean delicacies, both from the

land and from the sea. We recommend chartering a yacht

in Dubrovnik area and than sailing towards Mljet, Korčula

and Lastovo, as well stoping by Mali Stone on Pelješac

peninsula. Enjoy your visit to Mljet!

Playing Hide and Seek in the Adriatic – Skrivena Luka

Skrivena Luka is the biggest and one of the most beautiful bays on Lastovo island in the Adriatic Sea. The place got its name because it cannot be seen from the open sea – “skrivena luka” in Croatian means “hidden port”. It is also known as Porto Rosso in Italian.

The bay is located in the southern part of Lastovo island

and is well protected from strong winds and rough sea,

providing yachtsmen with safe anchoring.

Skrivena Luka is declared a part of Lastovo Natural Park

thanks to its beauty and intact nature rich with terrestrial and

marine fauna and flora. You will not want to go anywhere

but stay anchored and enjoy its turquoise waters forever.

However, if you feel like stretching your legs, do not hesi-

tate to put on your walking shoes or sneakers and take a

walk to Lastovo town 7 km away. There you can find one

of the oldest lighthouses in the Adriatic, called Struga,

keeping a watch over the bay and showing the way to

seafarers since 1839.

Fortunately I got the lighthouse keeper’s cell-phone number

and announced my visit to the lighthouse. He was very

hospitable and invited me to the lunch prepared excel-

lently by his wife Nada. I really cannot say what part of

the visit was more exciting – the view of Skrivena Luka,

Lastovo archipelago and the open seas or the lunch with

the lighthouse keeper’s family…

If you fall desperately in love with this place there is still

hope for you in the fact that the lighthouse keeper provides

accommodation within the lighthouse premises so you can

enjoy the view and isolated life for a while.

Jure Kvinta, the current lighthouse keeper is a successor

of the three-generations-long family tradition of lighthouse

keeping at Struga lighthouse. When not on duty, Mr. Jure

goes fishing with his dinghy and is happy to take you along

if you have deserved it with your approach and behavior.

Besides experiencing the stunning view from the top of a

vertical cliff and learning about the Kvinta family tradition,

you can find more about a legend about a giant lobster

and a coral that were caught in the depths of the sea

below Struga lighthouse. The gigantic lobster weighting

just under 18 kg was caught with a fishing net some time

at the end of the 19th century.

The lobster was sent to Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz

Joseph who gratefully returned the favor by sending a

chest full of coffee and sugar, precious foodstuffs at that

time. The other story is about a coral weighting some 45

kg that was pulled out by divers at the same location in

the 1950s using special devices. According to existing

data, it is the biggest coral ever pulled out of the Adriatic.

Is there any better invitation to visit Lastovo and Skrivena

Luka right away?

Steer Your Boat to Elaphiti Islands, but Don’t be Disappointed if You Don’t See Any Deer There…

The Elaphites are a group of islands situated to the west of the Croatian town of Dubrovnik. The islands were first mentioned in the 1st century AD, and their name comes from the Ancient Greek word for deer.

Deer used to inhabit these islands long ago, but nowa-

days there are none. The archipelago consists of several

islands: Šipan, Koločep and Lopud are the biggest islands

of the archipelago, and there are also ten smaller ones:

Daksa, Sv. Andrija, Ruda, Mišnjak, Jakljan, Olipa, Kosmeč,

Goleč, Crkvine and Tajan.

Many tourists from Dubrovnik choose this archipelago

as their daily trip destination. For sailors on sailing boats

or yachts, the Elaphites could provide a whole week of

fun and pleasure. If you sail with your friends on several

boats, it can be especially exciting to use the islands as

a race field and organize private sailing races. You can

enjoy the evenings if you sail to ports or anchorages in

front of Šipanska luka and Suđurađ on the island of Šipan,

or if you use the anchorages on Kalamota, Koločep, and

on one of the many beaches of Lopud. Lopud is located

between Šipan and Koločep and offers a wide variety of

beaches, which is why it is the most visited island in the

archipelago.

The local gastronomy is closely linked to the fruits and veg-

etables that grow almost spontaneously on these islands.

Specialties made of carob, both the liquer and cakes, are

a must to try. As there are many historic sites situated on

the island, cultural heritage lovers will also enjoy in the

archipelago. There are small pre-Romanesque churches,

chapel ruins and remains on the island of Koločep, and a

Franciscan monastery on Lopud. Many summer residences

previously owned by Dubrovnik aristocracy are located on

the islands as well.

Cavtat – the Gate of the Croatian Adriatic

Cavtat, also known as the Gate of the Croatian Adriatic, offers its visitors a warm and cheerful atmosphere. The port is equipped with berths and facilities and can accommodate both small charter sailing yachts and massive mega yachts. Cavtat offers something for everybody: nice restaurants, cocktail bars, casinos, art and history.

This little town, situated in the south of the Croatian Adri-

atic, was also known as Epidaurum, an ancient Greek

colony. Some historical sources claim that Dubrovnik was

founded by refugees form Cavtat who had to leave their

homes before the Slavic invasion. During the rule of the

medieval Dubrovnik Republic, Cavtat was the second

most important center of the Republic.

Nowadays, Cavtat amazes its visitors by a warm and

cheerful atmosphere in its historical core. In its surroundings,

there is plenty of tourist facilities and hotel resorts. Cavtat

is known as the Gate of the Croatian Adriatic because it

is the first stop for cruisers and sailors who enter territorial

waters of Croatia from the south. This makes Cavtat a log-

ical destination to take a break at, and, more importantly,

the paperwork for the yacht and the crew is done there.

The port of Cavtat is equipped with berths and facilities

to accommodate both small sailing yachts and massive

mega yachts. It happens very often that visitors stay in

Cavtat a few days longer than planned.

The port is very pleasant and well protected, the food

offered by some exclusive restaurants can be catered

aboard, and the nightlife offers various forms of entertain-

ment, ranging from sipping a glass of nice wine on a calm

terrace, to dancing in cocktail bars, and gambling in one

of Cavtat’s casinos.

To those who like classic art and history, Cavtat offers a

visit to the house, atelier and gallery of Vlaho Bukovac, the

most important Croatian painter of academic realism. Fur-

thermore, there is the Mausoleum of Račić family, designed

in art deco style by the internationally acclaimed Croatian

sculptor and architect Ivan Meštrović. The waterfront

and the city core, with the Duke’s Palace built in the 16th

century and the Church of St. Nicholas, are masterpieces

of medieval architecture.

Enjoy the beautiful Cavtat and be sure to explore its sur-

rounding area as well!

Moor Your Yacht in Marco Polo’s Neighborhood – ACI Korčula

There are several ways to reach Korčula by a chartered yacht. The best way to do it is to moor the boat in ACI marina Korčula, one of the smallest marinas on the Adriatic. It can accommodate as much as 150 yachts in the water and 16 on land. ACI marina Korčula also has a restaurant within the marina that offers a variety of delicious meals.

There are so many reasons to visit the island of Korčula,

especially its capital, which carries the same name – Korčula

town. The town is situated on a small peninsula and is

surrounded by coves and islets, so there are several ways

to reach it by a chartered yacht. The best way to enter the

town is to moor your yacht in ACI marina Korčula.

The marina is located in the very center of the town, with

a stunning view of the medieval city core surrounded by

walls, and of the city of Orebić at Pelješac penninsula,

just across a narrow canal. The marina is equipped with

fresh water and electricity and is able to accommodate as

much as 150 yachts in the water and 16 on a dry berth

throughout the whole year. Aside from basic services, there

is also a small store, a hairdresser, a nautical equipment

shop, a 10 t crane and a mechanic, a laundry and show-

er/toilet facilities. The restaurant within the marina offers

excellent choice of delicious meals for breakfast, as well

as for lunches and dinners.

Bigger yachts are also welcomed to ACI Korčula, but they

should be moored at the outer side of the pier. The moor-

ings on that side are strong, but additional anchoring is

recommended. Since there is a steep slope above Orebić,

extra care is required due to strong gusts coming from

that side, especially when a storm is expected. Additional

care is also required when maneuvering inside the piers

because ACI Korčula is one of the smallest marinas on

the Adriatic.

There is also quite a lot of side wind in Korčula so you

can never be too careful. Furthermore, it is recommended

to announce your approach through VHF channel 17, or

even better, to book your stay if you are chartering during

the high season in July and August. Petrol supplies can

be obtained at a station located some 0.5 NM to the east

of ACI Korčula, near the ferry port. The Captain’s house

within the marina accommodates exhausted sailors in two

luxury apartments.

Although maneuvering in ACI Korčula gets a bit tricky

from time to time, it is a perfect place to take a rest from

exploring southern Dalmatia or to escape the bad weather

and stay the night in the embrace of the legendary ad-

venturer Marco Polo. It is said that Marco Polo was born

on the island of Korčula, so do not miss an opportunity

to visit his house.

like having a meal in a restaurant, do not, however, limit

yourself only to the area within the walls of the town. Dare

to cross the line and visit Žrnovo, just 4 km from the town

center. There is a taxi service available at the entrance of

ACI marina Korčula. In case you have chosen Lumbarda

as a berth for your yacht, you can reach Žrnovo by a taxi

as well, or by a local bus line.

Once you have made it to Žrnovo, just keep following

“Konoba Belin” signs which will lead you to a cathedral of

genuine local food and drink. This family konoba (Dalmatian

word for “wine cellar”; nowadays the word for “tavern”) will

enchant you with its calm and pleasant atmosphere on a

large terrace covered with grapevine.

As soon as you are taken to your reserved seats, you will

be offered a homemade herb brandy and dried figs and

almonds. The man who runs around the tables with a napkin

and pretends to be a waiter is actually Žele, the owner of

the restaurant. The old person who sits in a corner with a

glass of bevanda (wine with a few sips of water, the favorite

traditional Dalmatian drink) who pretends to be the owner

is actually Žele’s father. He closely watches everything and

makes sure that everything is in order. Other people and

children who act like they are at their home actually are at

home. They are members of Žele’s family who help around

the restaurant and contribute to the homelike atmosphere.

Not long after you become comfortable in the restaurant,

homemade Dalmatian pršut (prosciutto) comes to the table,

along with goat cheese and salted pickarel. This starter is

usually served with zucchini fritters, which are the family spe-

cialty. The first course appears in the shape of the traditional

homemade makaruni (pasta) served with Belinese meat sauce

(Bolognese sauce is a pale imitation of this one), shrimps and

lobster sauce. The main course will depend on your mood,

but it ranges from grilled fresh seafood, traditional peka (food

prepared under an iron bell with charcoal on top) to pašticada

(genuine Dalmatian meat dish which tastes like history). This

symphony of domestic tastes is completed with genuine

plavac (red wine) from Korčula and pošip or grk (white wines)

from Lumbarda, Korčula. After you’ve satisfied your senses

with such fantastic food, you will be served the desert. You

can expect hrstule, klašuni and cukarini, domestic sweets

usually served with rose or cherub liqueur.

All food and drinks served at Belin’s are grown by Radanović

family. They have no certificate which confirms that their

food is ecologically produced, but they really do not need

it because organic is all they know!

Stupe – a Blue Lagoon in the Heart of the Adriatic

Whether you sail up or down the canal between Korčula Island and Pelješac peninsula, you will pass small islets called Stupe. The islets Stupa Vela, Stupa Mala and Majsan make up a beautiful lagoon some 2.2 miles east of Korčula town.

The lagoon is a beautiful and calm place where you can

anchor your charter yacht and take a swim in crystal-clear

turquoise waters. There is also a small pier which can

receive dinghies, motorboats or smaller sailing boats.

Why would someone want to get to the pier in a beautiful

lagoon with a safe anchorage though? The answer lies a

few steps from the beach of Stupa Vela.

There is a terrace which hides a restaurant and bar in its

shade, surrounded by pure nature. There is no loud music

or wild cocktail parties, but a small and cheerful family

restaurant offering you seafood delicacies. This place

was formerly owned by a tourist company from Korčula,

welcoming nudists from Korčula and Pelješac. Afterwards,

the bar and restaurant were abandoned because the

company went bankrupt, while the lagoon and the beach

were occasionally visited by random passengers.

Around then years ago, the concession was renewed and

the forgotten lagoon became a popular place for swimming,

sunbathing and having a delicious lunch. There is neither

electric power nor fresh water, which intensifies the feeling

of being surrounded by untouched nature.

The food prepared here is pretty simple, but extremely deli-

cious and perfect in its simplicity. All recipes originate from the

kitchen of the owner’s grandmother and all vegetables, spices,

olives, figs and wine come from the owner’s yard in Žrnovo,

near Korčula town. Since the owners’ ancestors belonged

to a peasant family, the menu is also modest and not too

expensive, but very pure, and carrying a taste of past times.

The menu always consists of scampi a la buzara, amberjack

or tuna steaks, octopus salad, octopus a la buzara, salted

sardines, homemade prosciutto (pršut) and island cheese.

For those who cannot imagine their lives without meat, a

nice cutlet, T-bone steak or even beefsteak can be grilled

and served with one of the delicious vegetable side dishes,

which are the specialty of the restaurant and can also be

served as a main course.

It is strongly recommended to make a stop in the lagoon

when sailing through the canal. You can also take a shuttle

from Korčula town if you decide to leave your charter yacht

in a marina in Korčula and spend an afternoon enjoying

the nature before the evening sightseeing of the medieval

walls of the old town of Korčula.

The Bay of Heavenly Tastes – Zaklopatica Bay

If you visit Lastovo island, you are destined to have a great time. Besides swimming in beautiful waters, exploring the island by bike or sailing around the area, be sure to visit Konoba Triton, one of the best restaurants on the island.

Zaklopatica is a bay on the northern side of Lastovo island and is known as a peaceful and safe bay among Croatian sailors and foreign visitors. Open to the north with a view to Korčula island, the bay is situated around 2 km from Lastovo and 7 km from the port of Ubli. The famous Du-brovnik is 55 NM to the southeast.

The bay offers an excellent anchorage in the turquoise waters, while its shores are mostly occupied by restaurant terraces and apartments that offer private accommodation. If you want to explore the interior of Lastovo island before you go to a restaurant for a delicious dinner, you can always rent a bike and discover the island.

One of the best things about Lastovo island is definitely Konoba Triton. This restaurant was founded by a former commander of a maritime police patrol boat. After his retirement, he realized that city life did not suit him, so he decided to enjoy the peace of his house in Zaklopatica and share it with his guests. The owner’s philosophy is that everything that is on the plate should come from your surroundings. That is why his food comes from the waters around Lastovo and is caught by him. He grows his own vegetables and makes his own wine. Bread and meat are the only foods he does not grow or make at home.

If you want to eat at Triton, you will have to announce your visit and provide the information on the type of your yacht and the number of the crew members. Triton is equipped with moorings, but the number of visitors is limited. After enjoying the dinner at Triton, many visitors decide to prolong their stay, so you should inform your host as soon as you decide to stay.

The menu at Triton always depends on the “daily catch”, but a standard offer consists of fish soups, marinated and salted fish, carpaccio, risotto, brodetto, buzzara, mollush salads... They are all prepared according to old family recipes and recipes gathered during cruises on the Mediterranean. Visiting Triton is always a new experience because, despite the “standard” offer, the food always has a special and unique taste.

Trstenik – The Port of Wine

Trstenik is situated on the southern coast of the Pelješac Peninsula, and is also called “the port of wine”. Visitors are welcome to several wine cellars in Trstenik. They can also try traditional food and local wine at small family establishments. Trstenik is the place to enjoy wine, sea and beautiful nature.

As sailing is often closely related to gastronomy and

oenology, every decent yachtsman should mark Trstenik

as one of the must-visit places on their way around the

Croatian Adriatic. The reason for this is very simple – the

place is known as “the port of wine”. Pelješac has always

been famous for its wines, some of which have an inter-

national reputation. In recent years, the wine business has

increased rapidly.

Trstenik is situated in the central part of the Pelješac Pen-

insula, on its southern coast. In the 19th century, Trstenik

was an important transport point, and the economy of

Pelješac was based on exporting wine and grapes. Trstenik

gradually lost its trading importance, but it quickly turned

into a tourist destination.

There is a breakwater, built by the Austro-Hungarians in

1903, that dominates the “wine port”. The port is pretty

busy with cruisers during high season, but the remaining

part of the waterfront and its surrounding area are suitable

for mooring and anchoring.

Yachtsmen who enjoy a good glass of wine are welcome

to several wine cellars in Trstenik, among which Grgić is

the most popular. The owner of this wine cellar earned

his fame in California, where he produced the famous

chardonnay that beat the finest Californian and French

chardonnays at a competition in Paris in 1976. In Trstenik,

only indigenous sorts of wine, none of which can disappoint

a true wine lover, are offered.

Aside from wine cellars, there are three restaurants and

two pizzerias in the village. The best combination of tradi-

tional food and indigenous local wine is offered by families

Radovanović and Živkušić. They will also serve you a very

unusual tidbit - a bread made of carob flour.

Apart from excellent food and wines, you may hear many

interesting stories about the history and the development of

this picturesque port from its residents. Another advantage

of this place is the fact that the road connecting Trstenik

with the rest of the peninsula is in a rather bad shape,

which could be an extra argument to visit Pelješac by a

yacht. After a visit to Trstenik, a trip around the rest of the

interesting Pelješac Peninsula is more than recommended.
