Who Is A Refugee?

In definition; a refugee is anyone who flees their home country due to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion.

As at the end of 2012 there were 15.4 million refugees. This is the highest number of refugees in more than 20 years.

The World Refugee Day established by the United Nations on 20th June was aimed at honouring the courage, strength and determination of children, women and men

The Refugee Status

In the world today it needs to be noted refugees usually have three choices up for them:

1.) Repatriation to source country.

2.) Resettlement elsewhere.3.) Integration in host society.

A vast majority of the refugees in the world today are not usually resettled. Over the last ten years, the number of refugees that have been resettled are only 836,500 in number.

The Protracted Refugee Situation

Is there anything like a protracted refugee situation? Yes, there is protracted refugee situation. This refers to where 25,000 or more refugees who are of the same nationality have been in exile for five years or more in a particular asylum country. This is according to the United Nations

According to the United Nations there are about 6.4 million refugees living in protracted refugee situation.

New Citizenship for Refugees

As highlighted; resettlement is also an option for refugees. Though this is the case, a closer look at the situation on the ground is important.

Do refugees get citizenship?

According to UNHCR 801,000 refugees have successfully been granted passports by host countries within the last one decade. When compared to the global refugee population, it is certainly a tiny fraction.

Yes, they can and do contribute to both economically and socially. Their presence in host countries stimulates local markets, open the host region for development and also helps create jobs.

46% of refugees in the world today are under 18. A majority of children are usually separated from their guardians

A refugee is anyone who crosses an international border. This means that if one is displaced from his or her place of residernce and does not cross the border, he or she is an internally displaced person (IDP)
