Outreach
The outreach team will be having a Fun-Crafty-Raiser to coordinate with the painting of the church. We will be offering everyone the opportunity to purchase a picture frame personalized with your favorite bible verse or what-ever else you would like it to say! You’ll be able to pick the color of the frame and size, 5x7 for $10 or 8 x10 for $15.
We will then display the pictures for everyone to see.
If anyone has old picture frames they would like to donate for this project we will gladly accept them, and if you inter-ested in learning how to make these or helping please let Wendy know.

As I See It…..
Some of the more joyful times for me in service to our
Lord was being with our youth on retreats and camping
trips. With Pastor Scott we would adventure to areas
away from Hebron like New Salem State Park near
Springfield, sleeping on the ground much like President
Lincoln did. While with Pastor Mabel, the desire was for
more comfortable yet rustic accommodations like Wesley
Woods in Williams Bay.
We always had a theme or subject for our adventures.
One year it was the Sermon on the Mount, another we
looked at prayer, while another we focused on the Gospel
of John 3:16,which I will revisit for Laity Sunday on Octo-
ber 7th. Every time, with every group it is different. One
year our goal was to find a rock or a stone which “spoke
to us”. We were to keep it close and confide in it our
hopes and our dreams while awaiting and listening for
answers. Many of the young folk thought we were a bit
out there but honestly we were trying to impress upon
them all the answers don’t come quickly, or easily and
that we may need to be patient and wait a while. (Much
like our dream to return to our former Sanctuary.)
Being on retreat often brought those who attended clos-
er together in the name of Jesus. Our surroundings were
simple. When it came time to worship we had no fancy
pews, no sound equipment or lighting. Those young peo-
ple aged ten and up knew we gathered together as one
because we loved God and were thankful for Jesus
Christ.
While living the Christian life is difficult—at times even
risky—what it means is quite simple. We are called to
love the Lord our God and to love our neighbors as our-
selves. If we all strive to love God and people, think of
the amazing things we can do to further God’s kingdom
and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Just remember,
when life gets complicated, focus on the simplicity of the
camping experience and focus on the beauty of an ever-
lasting life in Christ.
See you in church.
Your brother in Christ,
Roy Bailey
GOOD GOLF! Over twenty of us gathered for mini-Golf Adventure at the Golf and Games in Woodstock on Sunday, September 23rd. We provided an excellent picnic lunch while God gave us awe-some weather to enjoy some great fellowship time together golfing and visiting. Ray, our resident “Pro”, came in with a score of 44 with many others following closely. Prizes were awarded with the “Holey Rollers” taking home the gold! We also raised over $200 towards our Building Fund. Thanks to everyone who participated and voted to do it again next year!
As a former runner and distance run-ning coach, I have found the New Tes-tament’s description of the life of faith as running a long-distance race helpful. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews encourages his readers, “…to run with
perseverance the race that is set before us.” This image came to mind as Char and I were planning the sites to see while we are in Greece. I wanted to see the city of Mara-thon from which the original long distance race took its name. She, with less than great enthusiasm, agreed. In reading about Marathon and the origin of the race I came across the story of its beginnings.
According to legend, a Greek soldier ran from Marathon to Athens ( a distance of almost 25 miles) to announce the Athenian victory over the Persians after the 490 BC Battle of Marathon. After announcing his one word message, “Victory,” the runner collapsed and died. This tale inspired Olympic officials to include a race of about 25 miles (from Marathon to Athens) when the Olympics Games were re-vived in 1896. The distance became something more than 26 miles when King Edward wanted to see the start of the 1908 Olympic race from Windsor Castle, some 26 plus miles from London
Another marathon story is Herodotus’ account of a trained runner by the name of Pheidippides, who was sent from Athens to Sparta before the battle to request assistance from the Spartans. He was reported to have run 150 miles in about two days.
Like the marathon, the life of faith is a long-distance event. It too is at times exhausting and draining. It too at times tries every fiber of our being. As marathon runners “hit a wall” between the twenty-first and twenty-second mile when the legs give out and the runner desperately wants to quit, so in our faith journey at points “hit a wall” as we face enormous obstacles and are reminded of our weak-ness. Runners must push on through the wall. So we must. And there is a basic reason, one that I was remind-ed of by a cartoon.
The cartoon depicts a marathon runner, carrying a torch, who finally reaches the finish line to the cheers of the crowd. Exhausted, desperately trying to catch his breath, as the crowd waits for his words, the runner finally says, ”I forgot the message!” No matter how demanding the race, no matter the personal struggle, we must not forget the message which tells us that God has come to us in Christ Jesus to forgive us and heal us and give us new life.
That is a message which is the reason for the race, which keeps us in the race, and is the song of victory at the finish line. Thanks be to God!

After a number of meetings and discussions among the Wit-ness Outreach Ministry team it has been decided to devote energy towards promotion of our children's Sunday School program in an effort to reach out to the Hebron community and beyond to spread the Gospel. We're in the final stretch of putting together a new web page including video and pic-tures to invite parents and guardians in the community to visit our Sunday school program (we'll go live ahead of the Fall Family Fall Fest on October 13). During this school year we will have takeaways for any church/community events we hold. And the Witness Team will also host an event or two directly targeting community outreach/engagement. We'd love to hear your thoughts! Dave Dickey and Stephanie Claussen, Outreach Ministry Team Leaders
We kicked off our Sunday School year on September 2
nd
with Rally Day! We read a modern day story about Luis and Mia and discussed bibli-cal perspectives on immi-grants, began our mission to help refugees through #GreaterAs1, and we created flags from around the world. We also selected one student to be our “refugee”. He put on a blindfold to represent that his vision for a better life was
taken away. He was then led outside the church by the other students who used encouraging words in several lan-guages. They encouraged him to climb up on the brick plat-form that holds the church bell, and on the count of 3, he fell backwards to be caught by all the other students. Everyone got to participate in a “trust fall” and learn that it isn’t always easy to have faith, especially when you are in an unfamiliar place.
The children participated in the worship service that day with singing, music and readings. After worship, the congregation showed great support for their mission by joining in on a Cake Walk. Together we raised just over $100. A special thank you goes out to Debbie Arnold for initiating this effort, and to everyone who provided the delicious cakes, brownies and cupcakes. We are off to a great start!
We invite everyone to come to church on Laity Sunday, Octo-ber 7
th to hear the children sing, and again to the Family Fall
Fest on Saturday, October 13th, where the children will be presenting two songs. There will be games and activities for kids of all ages, so please come and invite your friends and extended family to come have fun with us!

General Conference
Listening Session
A special session of General Confer-
ence has been called for February
23-26, 2019 in St. Louis. The work of the conference is lim-
ited to receiving and acting upon the report of the commis-
sion on the Way Forward regarding how the denomination
will treat issues of human sexuality (ordination and marriage
for the LGBTQ community).
The Commission’s report has been published and contains
three main proposals:
The One Church Plan would allow but not require clergy to
perform same-gender weddings and allow but not require
annual conferences to ordain LGBTQ pastors. The Council
of Bishops has recommended adoption of this plan.
The Connectional Conference Plan would create three
values-based connectional conferences, each with its own
theological viewpoint and response to issues related to
LGBTQ inclusion.
The Traditionalist Plan maintains the current United Meth-
odist teaching on human sexuality. This plan recommends
no change to the language in the Book of Discipline.
Change is coming for The United Methodist church. How will
our church be affected? Will other possibilities emerge?
The Northern Illinois Delegation is hosting listening sessions
for interested clergy and laity in hopes of answering some of
our questions.
The purpose of these gatherings is for the Delegation to hear
from the diversity of membership that make up the NIC. The
desire is to better understand the thinking and feeling within
our Annual Conference membership about the denomina-
tions’ future.
The Elgin District session will be November 10 at the Bar-
rington UMC at 9 AM. I do hope there could be a car full of
people wanting to go. Let’s talk about it?

This is an exciting time for our church. There was a meeting regard-ing our upcoming Family Fall Fest and the positive energy, creative ideas and cooperation during the meeting was exhilarating! Thank all of you who are
participating in the organization of this event. On Sunday, November 4th, during regular church service, we will be honor-ing and remembering those we have lost during this last year. If you wish to have someone you loved honored that day please notify the office at 815-648-2512. On Thanksgiving Day, November 22nd, we will again be having our annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner. The Church will be open at 12:30 p.m. with dinner being served at 1:00 p.m. There is no charged for this as it is our pleasure to serve you. If you’d like to bring a dish to pass we will gladly accept it but it is not necessary. Come join us for good food, games and great fellowship! Always be full of joy in the Lord; I say it again, rejoice! Philippians 4:4 Shirlee Correll and Barb Cheek, Co-Chairs of Nurture
