THE PARK

GRAND CANYON HISTORY

The Grand Canyon located in the north of Arizona became a National Monument on the 11th January 1908, by proclamation of Presi-dent Theodore Roosevelt and was redesigned as a national park on 26th February 1919.

In 1979, the park was declared a world her-itage site by Unesco.

The park receives approximately 4.5 mill ion visitors each year. Visitors increases during summer (June to August),

There are numerous fossils, including the oldest dating back to the Precam-brian. Grand Canyon has been home to native Americans for thousands of years. Several tribes such as the Apaches that were living there by hunt-ing and gathering. There is not much in-formation about them nowadays.

FAUNAThe Grand Canyon has many dif ferent species of animals,

mostly invertebrates (+1000 species) and birds (+300 species). We can also f ind mammals, reptiles and some

amphibians and f ish.

Several species that are threatened, endangered or only found there are living in the Grand Canyon.

The most common animals are cougars, bobcats, wild goats, deer, rabbits, California condors, bats, wolves, squirrels and

varied lizards and snakes.

FILMOGRAPHY Many f ilms, series and documentaries like "The

Lone Ranger", "Fort Apaches" and "The searchers" have been f ilmed in the Grand Canyon.

CLIMATEIt is well known for its desert landscape.

The climate is characterized by the aridity and the altitude. Just l ike much of Arizona.

The annual rainfall on South Rim is 380 mm/year

There are various activit ies to do there such as:

helicopter f l ights, tours, walks, helicopter f l ights, rafting, bungee jumping, horseback and mule riding by historical areas, walk up to the spot of Bright Anjel, route up to the spot imperial, a day hiking the canyon... and many other things.

There is an aisle of glass called Grand Canyon Skywalk for visitors.

The park consists of dif ferent spots you can visit such as the Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, The Wave or the south rim and north rim.
