San Marino (italienisch Repubblica di San Marino, Beiname La Serenissima) ist die älteste bestehende Republik der Welt mit einer Geschichte, die angeblich bis auf das Jahr 301 zurückgeht. Sie ist als Enklave vollständig von Italien umgeben und liegt zwischen den Regionen Emilia-Romagna (Provinz Rimini) und Marken (Provinz Pesaro und Urbino), nahe der adriatischen Küste bei Rimini. Den Felskamm Monte Titano krönt die Festung La Guaita. San Marino besteht aus neun Gemeinden. Das Land wird fälschlicherweise oft als Stadtstaat angesehen, entspricht jedoch nicht den Merkmalen eines solchen Staates. Die Republik San Marino befindet sich auf der Ostabdachung der etruskischen Apenninen. Die Nord-Süd-Ausdehnung von zwölf Kilometern wird fast komplett vom Rücken des steil nach Osten abfallenden kalkartigen Monte Titano durchzogen. Mit einer Höhe von 756 Metern ist er gleichzeitig der höchste Punkt der Republik. Der tiefste Punkt ist der Torrente Ausa mit 55 Metern. San Marino liegt bei 43°56’ Nord und 12°26’ Ost. Das Staatsgebiet hat annähernd die Form eines unregelmäßigen Vierecks und ist überwiegend hügelig. Es ist 60,57 Quadratkilometer groß. Die Grenzlänge zu Italien beträgt 39 Kilometer. Zwei größere Flüsse entspringen im Staatsgebiet: die Ausa und der Fiumicello. Des Weiteren durchfließen die Flüsse San Marino und Marano das Land, welches an die beiden italienischen Regionen Emilia-Romagna im Nordosten und Marken im Südwesten grenzt. Am südwestlichen Hang des Titano befindet sich die Hauptstadt San Marino.

San Marino has the smallest population of all the members of the Council of Europe.San Marino claims to be the oldest surviving sovereign state and constitutional republic in the world, as the continuation of the monastic community founded on 3 September 301, by stonecutter Marinus of Arbe. Legend has it that Marinus left Rab, then the Roman colony of Arba, in 257 when the future emperor, Diocletian, issued a decree calling for the reconstruction of the city walls of Rimini, which had been destroyed by Liburnian pirates.
