ThE KhmEr CroWN JEWEl Spread out over 40 miles in northwestern Cambodia and rediscovered in 1860 in a dense jungle, the magnificent temple city of Angkor represents the epitome of Khmer architecture and artistry. Here, a primer on its best-known temples.

ANGKOR WAT At the behest of King Suryavarman II, it took 25,000 workers over 35 years to complete this 12th-century temple complex. This Cambodian icon — dedicated to the Hindu

god Vishnu — features a central tower surrounded by four smaller ones and intricate bas-relief carvings and statues throughout.

BAYON TEMPLE As the main attraction of the fortress city of Angkor Thom, this temple features 54 squat towers, upon which 172 large-scale faces look out with beguiling expressions. Tear

yourself away from their mysterious gaze to marvel at the two sets of bas-reliefs featuring both mythological and mundane scenes.

TA PROHM Upon its discovery, this temple was left much like it was found — entangled in the surrounding jungle foliage, with vines creeping up its ornate walls and tree roots

dripping down its ceilings. The surreal sight becomes even more romantic when viewed in the golden light of sunrise or in the afternoon.

BANTEAY SREI Built in the 10th century and located about 16 miles from the main cluster of Angkor temples, the “Citadel of Women” was constructed with red sandstone. The

material, which can be carved like wood, allows for precise and intricate carvings, for which the temple is known.

BANTEAY SAMRE Near Banteay Srei is Banteay Samre, one of the most complete temple complexes of Angkor — and often the less-visited, since it is off the beaten path. A stroll through this

quiet site is a great opportunity to inspect its elaborate architecture and fine carvings from up close.

Myanmar has many pockets of life seemingly untouched by the passage of time, but Inle Lake is truly a world apart. Home to generations of Intha, who farm and fish its waters, this high-altitude lake has its own eco-system, agriculture, economy and culture. It is a place ruled by water, one where children learn to row as soon as they can walk; ingenious floating farms produce fresh produce; and lotus stems are laboriously turned into thread and woven.

One of the most enduring cultural traditions in the region is of the Inle fishermen’s unique style of rowing: Standing on one leg at the stern while bracing the oar with their other, they somehow manage to gracefully push the oar with one leg in a rhythmic, dance-like movement that makes them look like they are bobbing along on the surface of the water. Their traps — hand-woven from bamboo — resemble huge baskets. Much like in times past, these fishermen sell their catch at the five-day market, so named because it rotates between villages every five days to better suit the needs of the local hill tribes who come to buy and sell their goods. Villagers arrive in colorfully embroidered outfits to barter and share gossip in this lively setting. Other items for sale range from handmade crafts to produce grown on the lake’s fascinating “floating gardens” — a system of lake gardening developed by the local fishermen — whereby the water plants are harvested in large bundles, mixed with earth and anchored to the lake floor with bamboo staves. These gardens are exceptionally fertile, allowing locals to grow flowers and vegetable crops.

Cottage industries also thrive along the lake, and the Inn Paw Khone Village is full of family-owned workshops housed in wooden buildings built on stilts above the water. Here, you can witness the art of ikat, a traditional weaving technique. As popular as silk is nowadays, it is only here that you can find scarves made from fiber gathered meticulously — one by one — from the stems of the lotus.

While Inle Lake has monasteries and temples along its shores, as well as delicious local food in the Shan style, it is the slow-paced, sustainable lifestyle — now all but lost to the modern world — that makes a lasting impression on visitors.

lifE oN iNlE lAKEWater is the source of life for the self-sustaining people that live along Myanmar’s great lake.

iNDiA’S moST Colorful fAirTypically a feast for the senses, India is experienced at its colorful best during Pushkar Fair. Let A&K introduce you to the country’s largest, most vibrant fest during a special departure.

Throughout the year, pious Hindus make a pilgrimage to Pushkar to dip in the holy waters of Lake Pushkar and visit its temple. But each November, Pushkar welcomes a different kind of pilgrim: Livestock traders heading in for the annual camel and cattle sale at the outskirts of the city. During the fair, thousands of steers, camels and horses are traded. In order to fetch the best price, most of the creatures are lavishly decorated — and their owners dress up as well, wearing vibrantly hued turbans and long moustaches. Beyond the livestock sale and vendors, the fairgrounds teem with plenty of action as tribal villagers, dressed in their traditional best, also gather and mingle with acrobats, fortune tellers and performers.

During your visit, you spend a full day with your expert A&K Tour Director and local guide enjoying the wonder and incredible photographic opportunities. To experience the festival at its best, start your visit in the early morning, carefully walking amid the gypsy campfires as owners and animals awaken. Watch as camels lie in the sand and munch on grain from enormous feed bags, while men in long robes sit in circles and drink coffee.

As the day progresses, the colors get brighter, as women from all over Rajasthan float in wearing beautifully hued saris, and puppeteers, musicians and storytellers mill about, entertaining the crowds. Beyond livestock, merchants set up shop and sell everything from gaudy camel tassels and vintage gypsy dowry bags to spices. Also on display are a bevy of sporting activities, including tug-of-war and camel and steer races. This extravaganza represents India at her most authentic, which is why A&K is proud to deliver you to the heart of this fair.

See the splendor of the Pushkar fair on the special November 8 departure of Taj mahal & the Treasures of india.
