DESCRIPTION

In January 2014, Datavail commissioned Forrester Consulting to evaluate the viability of a managed service approach to database administration. With the explosion in the variety, velocity and volume of data and databases, coupled with the scarcity of DBA talent, the time is right to consider an alternative approach to managing databases. Forrester Consulting conducted the survey of executives in mid to large enterprises who are using managed services to augment their in-house DBA. Forrester Principal Analyst Noel Yuhanna shares the results of the study which include: Improved SLAs – in some cases, dramatically improved Consistent 24×7 coverage Deep expertise in areas where in-house staff needed assistance Multi-platform expertise Improved retention of on-staff DBAs

IT Struggles To Keep Up With Database Administration Requirements

› Performance – need for faster Apps, larger databases are posing a bigger challenge

› Lack of staff – There is a Database-to-DBA ratio challenge: each DBA is managing more databases than ever

› Data integration issue – more sources, need for real-time data is driving database administration issues

› High volume growth – Enterprises double the amount of data for critical Apps… and more data means more issues…

The new database requirements ....

• Strong security requirements…• Higher performance• Improved availability of Apps• On-demand scalability• Backups for Tier-2 and Tier-3 Apps• Better SLAs• Faster provisioning of databases• Faster migrations/upgrade to new versions• And many other new requirements…

What Are Your Choices To Lower Database Administration Costs?

› Stop building new Apps - stopping to build more databases… (not an option)

› Stop growing your databases – it’s complex by archiving, spitting databases into many, but controlling growth requires more DBAs.

› Buy more expensive database tools -- through automation and control, but requires bigger investment

› Move to open source databases– but that isn’t a straightforward migration…

› Hire more DBAs… but at a cost..

Datavail

• It may be helpful to dig into an operationalized view of database management.

• This is far less about a technical discussion and more about the processes and approaches that can help bring greater efficiency and capacity planning to the database management function.

• In general we find that customers need about double the DBA capacity they currently have to effectively meet demand.

• Constrained budgets often prevent customers from solving this on their own and the result is often some combination of a stressful operating environment and high DBA turnover.

• Tier 3 DBAs end up doing Tier 2 work

• This leads to job dissatisfaction & turnover

• Making the situation more difficult is the shortage of DBAs

• A strong operational layer actually helps make recruiting and retention of in-house DBAs easier

• Because of the lower cost it eases budgetary pressure and allows DBA capacity to match required workload

Perception versus Reality

• DBAs will inevitably be fearful of adding database managed services to their team.

• Prior experiences of bad or poor quality of delivery, and fear of loss of control are very present emotions when outsourcing is being considered.

• And it’s not just the DBAs – the managers of the database teams are also fearful of the same thing.

• But this perception inevitably changes as trust is built and positive experiences replace the perception.

• All of a sudden because of a lower average cost per unit of delivery capacity is able to be expanded without major budgetary pressure, senior DBAs get to do senior level work, and strategy replaces fire fighting.
