  • 3. ASU Downtown To Test Classroom Podcasting Click Here for Article Brief Summary of Article 1: Arizona State University has taken the next step at advancing our collegiate classrooms. They have now switched to podcast lectures, which allows the students to have the information from lectures at their disposal portably. Podcasting is just an electronic file that allows the students to watch the lecture at anytime or anywhere on a computer or audio device. The students will be able to download these lectures from iTunes, which most students are already very familiar with.     • Students can use things that are very familiar to them already, like their iPods or laptops, to download lectures that they can then look at to study or catch up.
    • For a University, the cost of podcasting for one year is $10,000.
    • This is great for students who for some reason cannot make it to class, whether it be sickness or personal issues. Now they can simply go online and download the lecture in order to keep from getting behind in classroom activities.
    • ASU is not the only university doing this. Many universities are testing this new technology in the classroom.
  • 5. My Thoughts About Article 1
    • Theyre going to listen to something anyway, they might as well listen to a lecture.

    • I think that ASU is making a great decision to have podcasting of each lecture available to its students. Although the installation of this new technology is expensive, I believe that the benefits that will come from podcasting will be much greater than the price of using it. From what I have heard from this article, the hassle of trying to contact someone for notes that you missed on one day of class will be over. If you ever need to know what happened in class, you just download it. Some people may say that this technology might keep students from going to class and just watching the lecture, but every student needs face-time with a teacher, time to talk with the professor about any questions that they may have, and that is why I do not believe that students will use this gift in such a way. There will always be benefits to going to a class lecture rather than a recorded lecture and I think most students know that.

    • Brief Summary of Article 2:
    • According to this article, getting started with podcasting in the classroom is not very difficult. First you need to download the software. If you have a computer in your classroom, it will be free to download. If your computer is a Mac, download the program GarageBand. If your computer is a PC, download the program Audacity. You must also purchase a microphone, unless one is already built into your computer. Lastly, you need a digital MP3 player and recorder. All of this equipment will be enough to get you started.     • Getting started with podcasting in your class doesn't have to be a complex undertaking.

    • I never thought that podcasting would be that simple to set up, but after reading this article I realized that Podcasting is not as difficult as you would think. By following these steps you could very easily set up a Podcast for your class. The benefits of using podcasting in your class could be endless, it is all about how far you want to take it. This article helped me understand that you do not have to be the most computer savvy person in the world in order to start your own podcast.

    • Brief Summary of Article 3
    • In this article, Jeff Curto talks about his experiences with using podcasts in his classroom and how it affects his students. He posted his lectures on his podcast over the internet every week for his History of Photography, he noticed that it was not just his classroom students who were following his podcasts. Hundreds of people were viewing his podcasts in order to help them learn about photography. Curto uses E-mails that he receives from virtual students to show his in-class students what they may not have considered about his lecture. He has made his lectures accessible to anyone that is interested in his topics and uses the responses that people post to fuel classroom discussion.

    • Podcasts made it possible for more than just his classroom students to participate in Curtos photography discussions, which allowed for more people to participate and add their own feedback to the discussion.
    • Students learn that the world is full of opportunities to learn and that podcasting allows for them to network with people from across the world and hear different opinions on different topics.

    • My own classroom-bound students also discovered that listening to and viewing podcasts of class content at a later time aided them in their progress through the course.

    • I was amazed that so many people were tuning in to Jeffs podcast every week and allowed Jeff to pose some very in-depth discussions for his classroom students to discuss. I never saw that as a learning opportunity, until I heard what it offered Curtos classroom. This, like the other articles, has opened me up to the many benefits that podcasting offers the educational setting.
  • 12. Conclusion
    • After reading these 3 articles, I have learned so much about not only what podcasting can do for the classroom, but also how do get started in making a podcast. I feel that this information has helped me understand what a podcast is and all of its features. After hearing the effects of having a podcast in the classroom, I think that in the near future podcasting is going to become a common thing that will be found in schools all over the country.
