Interested in getting your FREE Commercial Driver’s License? The Troops to Trucks program is an expedited and seamless process to assist veterans obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and ease the transition into civilian employment. Through a partnership with The Governor’s Office of Workforce Development and The Department of Labor, The Department of Driver Services (DDS) offers this program at several different DDS locations throughout the state. There are 3 ways to gain a CDL and start your new career! 1. Veterans who are in their 90 days before or after discharge and have a DA348 with Tractor Trailer endorsements can visit their local DDS center to take the written and free test up to 3 times. A driving test is not required. This is paid for by a grant through the U.S. Department of Labor. 2. Veterans who have not driven in a while and have a DA348 with Tractor Trailer endorsements can take a two week driving course at Albany Tech located at 1704 S. Slappey Blvd, Albany, GA 31701 and Atlanta Technical College located at 1560 Metropolitan Pkwy SW, Atlanta, GA 30310. Veterans will take a short refresher course with a written test and driving test to earn the CDL. This course does not qualify for the HOPE grant and the cost will vary depending on the school. This options costs more than the 8 week course. 3. Veterans with or without a tractor trailer endorsement can take an eight week course, pass the exam, and get connected with employment opportunities. This free course is recognized and endorsed by all truck companies. Eligible veterans can take this training for free. Contact your local career center to learn more information by visiting http://www.dol.state.ga.us/find_career_centers.htm. To find your closest DDS location, please go to http://1.usa.gov/Xsht3L. 1. Air brakes are really three different braking systems: _________________
______________________, _______________________________, and
____________________________________. Page # __________
2. The ______________ controls when the air compressor will pump air into the air storage
tanks. When air tank pressure rises to the ‘cut-out’ level (around ____________ pounds
per square inch or ‘psi’), the _________________ stops the compressor from pumping air.
Page # ___________
3. The ______________________________ system applies and releases the brakes when you
use the brake pedal during normal driving. Page # __________
4. If the ______________________ has its own oil supply, check the oil level before driving.
Page # _________
5. All vehicles with air brakes have a _______________________ connected to the air tank.
Page # _________
6. Some air brake systems have an ___________________________ to put alcohol into the air
system. This helps to reduce the risk of ice in the air brake valves and other parts during
cold weather. Ice inside the system can make the brakes stop working. Page # _______
7. Compressed air usually has some ____________ and some compressor ______________ in
it, which is bad for the air brake system. For example, the ________________ can freeze in
cold weather and cause brake failure. Page # ____________
8. Each air tank is equipped with a drain valve in the bottom. There are two types: Manually
operated by turning a quarter turn or by pulling a cable. You must drain the tanks yourself
at the end of each _____________________. Page # ____________ Automatic air tanks
are available with ______________ ____________ devices. These help prevent freezing of
the automatic drain in cold weather. Page # ______________
9. A safety relief valve is installed in the first tank the air compressor pumps air to. The valve
is usually set to open at ______________. Page # ________

23. Before driving a vehicle with a dual air system, allow time for the air compressor to build up
a minimum of ______________ pressure in ________________ the primary _____________
secondary systems. Page # _________
24. When main air pressure is lost, the spring brakes come on. Some vehicles, such as buses,
have a separate air tank which can be used to _________________ the spring brakes. Page

32. To test the service brake wait for normal air pressure, release the __________ brake, move
the vehicle forward slowly (about five MPH), and apply the brakes firmly using the brake
pedal. Page # ___________
33. To check that the spring brakes come on automatically, continue to fan off the air pressure
by stepping ________________ the brake pedal to reduce _______________ pressure. The
_________________ protection valve and __________________________ valve should
close (pop out) on a tractor-trailer combination vehicle and the
________________________ valve should close (pop out) on other combination and single
vehicle types when the air pressure falls to the manufacturer’s specification
(_______________). This will cause the spring brakes to come on. Page # __________
34. You may not be able to stop faster with _______________ but you should be able to steer
around an obstacle while braking, and avoid skids caused by over braking. Page # ________
35. The use of brakes on a long and/or steep downgrade is only a supplement to the braking
effect of the ______________. Page # ________
36. The proper braking technique is: (1) apply the brakes just hard enough to feel a definite
slowdown. (2)When your speed has been reduced to approximately
___________________ below your “safe” speed, release the brakes. When your speed has
increased to your “safe” speed, repeat steps one and two. Page # ____________

Section 4: Combination Vehicles
1. Combination vehicles are usually _________________, _________________, and require
more _________________________ than single commercial vehicles. Page # __________
2. Steer gently and smoothly when you are pulling trailers. If you make a sudden movement
with your steering wheel, your trailer could tip over. Follow far enough behind other
vehicles (at least ________________ for each _________________ of your vehicle

3. The following two things will help you prevent rollover-–keep the cargo as close to the
_______________________ as possible, and drive slowly _________________________.
Page #______________
4. Large combination vehicles take longer to stop when they are ________________ than
when they are __________________________. Page # ______________
5. When ________________________________, the very stiff suspension springs and strong
brakes give poor traction and make it very easy to lock up the wheels. Your trailer can
swing out and strike other vehicles. Your tractor can jackknife very quickly. Page #
________
6. When more cargo is piled up in a truck, the ‘center of gravity’ moves higher up from the
_____________________. The truck becomes easier to _______________________. Page

8. The earliest and best way to recognize that the trailer has started to skid is by seeing it
_________________________________________. Page # ____________
9. When the wheels of a trailer lock up, the trailer will tend to swing around. This is more
likely to happen when the trailer is ______________________________ loaded. This type
of jackknife is called a ____________________________ jackknife. Page # ____________

14. Never use the _________________________ for parking because all the air might leak out
unlocking the brakes (in trailers that don’t have spring brakes). Page # ________
15. The ______________________ should be used only to test the trailer brakes. Page #
_____________
16. The trailer protection valve will close automatically if air pressure is low (in the range of
_________________________). Page # ___________
17. The trailer air supply control on newer vehicles is a _______________________________,
which you use to control the tractor protection valve. You push it in to supply the
_____________ with air, and pull it out to shut the air off and put on the ______________
emergency brakes. Page # ____________
18. Every combination vehicle has two air lines, the ___________________ line and the
__________________________ line. They run between each vehicle (tractor to trailer,
trailer to dolly, dolly to second trailer, etc.). Page # ________
19. The ___________________ line (also called the control line or signal line) carries air, which
is controlled by the foot brake or the trailer _____________ brake. Page # ______________
CDL Workbook Page 29
20. The ____________________ line (also called the supply line) has two purposes. First, it
supplies air to the trailer ______________________. Second, the emergency line controls
the emergency brakes on the _______________________________. Loss of air pressure in
the emergency line causes the ____________________ emergency brakes to come on.
Page # ______________
21. ______________________ are coupling devises used to connect the service and emergency
air lines from the truck or tractor to the trailer. Page # _____________
22. When connecting the _________________________, press the ____________________
together with the couplers at a 90 degree angle to each other. A turn of the ____________
_____________ attached to the hose will join and lock the couplers. Page # ____________
23. When coupling, make sure to couple the proper ___________________ together. To help
avoid mistakes, colors are sometimes used. _________________ is used for the service line
and ________________ is for the emergency (supply) lines. Sometimes, _______________
________________ are attached to the lines with the words ‘service’ and ‘emergency’
______________________ on them. Page # ___________
24. Some vehicles have ‘dead end’ or dummy couplers to which the hoses may be attached
when they are not in use. This will prevent _________________ and _____________ from

____________
25. If you cross the air lines, you could drive away but you ____________________ have
_________________________ brakes. Page # _________
26. If the ___________________________ don’t release when you push the trailer air supply
control, check the _______________________________ connections. Page # __________
27. Newer trailers have _______________ brakes just like trucks and truck tractors. However,
converter dollies and trailers built before _____________ are not required to have
_____________ brakes. Page # ____________
28. Trailers will have yellow ABS malfunction lamps on the _______________ side, either on the
_____________________ or __________________ corner. Page # _______________
CDL Workbook Page 30
29. Having ABS on only the _______________, or even on only _______________________, still
gives you more control over the vehicle during braking. Page # ____________
30. You may not notice a major leak in the __________________ line until you put the brakes
on. Then, the air loss from the leak will lower the air tank pressure quickly. If it goes low
enough, the trailer ________________________ brakes will come on. Page # _________
31. But the brakes will only hold as long as there is air pressure in the trailer air tank.
Eventually, the air will leak away and then there will be no brakes. Therefore, it is very
important for safety that you use _____________________ when you park trailers without
