Protect Your ComputerViruses, Trojans, and worms are all threats to your computer system.

There are three main types: spyware, scareware, and adware.

Spyware can be key loggers or monitor programs which steal your information and send it over the Internet. Scareware, or crimeware, often appears as a fake antivirus alert, holding your system hostage

until you pay or remove it. Adware installs unsolicited advertising on your computer.

Don’t Open Email From People You Don’t Know

They will often contain malicious links or attachments which will infect your computer. Seems obvious, but we often act fast and do the wrong thing. Also, if your friend’s computer

is infected, it will probably find your email in the computer’s address book, and send out a malicious email to you. So if you get strange email attachments from a friend, scan the attachments with your

antivirus program before even thinking about opening.

These attacks can hide behind Facebook notifications, your bank, and just recently from Apple. They ask you to a follow a link and verify your password and personal information.

Beware of Fake Play orDownload Buttons

Users are fooled into clicking on them and downloading something completely unrelated. You’ve likely seen this numerous times on popular or viral videos and music, stating that you need this

download in order to play the file. Another issue is when you do a search for a popular program or utility, Google brings you the results, and the top rated site is a malware site. You download the

software and it also loads unwanted programs. Pay attention when installing programs and what you agree to. Often times this optional software has unwelcome toolbar, pop-ups, and search.

Don’t Fall forthe Pop-Ups

Sometimes you visit a website, or are redirected to a website that tells you that your computer is infected or that that computer is not running optimally. They usually ask you to install a tool to scan your computer, and of course they find issues which only their software can remove. Next they are

asking for your credit card, to charge you for removing the malware you just installed.
